Road Trip Project

This summer, your family has decided to take a road trip. You will start in Springfield, IL and travel to five otherU.S. cities before returning to Springfield. It is your job to calculate how far youwill travel.

Step 1: Locate the cities on the map and highlight them.

Starting City / Springfield, IL
City 1 / Washington DC
City 2 / Atlanta, GA
City 3 / New Orleans, LA
City 4 / San Antonio, TX
City 5 / Tulsa, OK
Ending City / Springfield, IL

Step 2: Using a ruler, draw a straight line connecting each city you will be visiting.

(Draw a straight line from Springfield to Washington DC. Then, draw a straight line from Washington DC to Atlanta, GA, etc.)

Step 3: Using the ruler, measure the length of the line connecting each city in your trip.

ROUND EACH DISTANCE TO THE NEAREST HALF CENTIMETER. Fill out the followingtable:

Starting City / Ending City / Distance on Map
(cm)
Springfield, IL / Washington DC
Washington DC / Atlanta, GA
Atlanta, GA / New Orleans, LA
New Orleans, LA / San Antonio, TX
San Antonio, TX / Tulsa, OK
Tulsa, OK / Springfield, IL

Step 4: Use the scale on the map to write a ratio of distance on map (in miles) to distance in real life. Use the scale 2.5 cm on the map = 300 miles in real life. How many miles are in 1 cm?

scale ______1 cm_

actual x miles

Step 5: Calculate the distance of each leg of your trip using the ratio you just found. Set up a proportion and cross multiply to find the distance in real life between each of the cities.ROUND TO THE NEAREST MILE.

Road Trip / Distance between cities (cm)
(From Step 3 Above) / Proportion
(show work) / Distance in Miles
(mi)
Springfield, IL to Washington DC / 5 cm /
Washington DC to Atlanta, GA /
Atlanta, GA to
New Orleans, LA
New Orleans, LA to San Antonio, TX
San Antonio, TX to Tulsa, OK
Tulsa, OK to Springfield, IL

Step 6: Find the total distance traveled during your road trip in miles.

Road Trip Project: Part Two

Number of Miles Traveled __3,000_miles__(from Step 6 on Part 1)

Your family has decided to rent a vehicle for your road trip. It is your job to determine which vehicle you should rent. You have 5 choices.

2012 Ford Mustang / 2012 Smart Car / 2012 Dodge Ram / 2012 Honda Odyssey / 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe
Cost to drive 1 mile / $0.17 / $0.12 / $0.27 / $0.19 / $0.23
Fuel used to drive 25 miles / 1.09 gallons / 0.69 gallons / 1.67 gallons / 1.19 gallons / 1.47 gallons

Step 9: Calculate the average gas mileage of each vehicle by setting up and solving a proportion. Show your Work! The first proportion has been done for you, and the second proportion has been set up for you.Round your answer to the nearest whole number.

Ford Mustang / Smart Car / Dodge Ram / Honda Odyssey / Chevrolet Tahoe
miles
gallon
(mpg) / 25 mi x mi
1.09 g 1 g
1.09x = _25_
1.09 1.09
x = 23 / 25 mi x mi
0.69 g 1 g
Gallons of gas needed=
total miles ÷ mpg / 3000 ÷ 23
130 gallons of gas

Step 10: Calculate how much it would cost to take each vehicle on the trip. You will first need to find the cost to drive the vehicle the total number of miles and then the cost for fuel. Add the two together to find the total cost for the vehicle.

Ford Mustang / Smart Car / Dodge Ram / Honda Odyssey / Chevrolet Tahoe
Cost to Drive
total miles
x cost per mile / ($0.17/mile)
3000
x $0.17
$510.00 / ($0.12/mile) / ($0.27/mile) / ($0.19/mile) / ($0.23/mile)
Fuel to Drive
Gallons of Gas (Step 9 – box 2)
x $3.20 / 130
x $3.20
$416.00
Total Expense
Cost to Drive
+ Fuel to Drive / $510.00
+ $416.00
$926.00

Step 11:Rank each of the cars from the previous page in order from least to greatest based on their total expense.

Step 12: Based on your family, which car would you rent for your road trip and why?
