CITY COUNCIL
WORKSHOP: Reminder, at the Council’s request, the Mayor has scheduled a Workshop for Thursday, July 22, 2004 at 7:00 in Council Chambers to discuss the sewer separation project and resolution of flooding of basements in the Lamothe Street neighborhood. City Engineer and Director of Public Works will be able to explain the history of the problem, recent activities and project plans.
ENVIRONMENT
Saco River: Environmental Enforcement Officer Brian Phinney has been compiling information to advise concerning issues and concerns resident Bob Boillard has raised at Council meetings. A report will be forwarded to the Council.
TAX ASSESSMENT
Property Valuation Letters: Attached is a copy of letters sent to residential property owners whose tax assessment increased more than 5% since last year. The purpose is to make property owners aware of assessment increases before they receive their tax bill and what to do if they question the assessment. 1600 letters were mailed, representing 20-25% of all residential properties.
ANNIVERSARIES
French Exploration: 2005 will mark two important anniversaries fir the City of Biddeford. First, July will mark the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s’ exploration of the area. Local historian and professor Norm Beaupre has been compiling information on the even. He is working with the Historical Society, University of New England and Hill Beach Association to plan a commemoration of Champlain’s visit. A full report and of events and activities will be presented to the Council as the dates nears.
City Status: 2005 also marks the 150 years since Biddeford became a “ City.” Settled by Europeans in 1630, incorporated in 1718, Biddeford became a City on February 10, 1855. Events to commemorate this milestone will also be presented to Council for input and ideas. The scheduled renovation of City Hall – floor repair, painting etc.—can be a fitting tribute for example.

Downtown Guides: The DDC distributed 10,000 guides listing businesses to area hotels, restaurants and establishments including City Hall, such as the Clerks Office.
