Position Summary
The Deputy Dean, Learning & Teaching is accountable for providing strategic and scholarly leadership for all learning and teaching activities in the School for Higher Education and VET programs. This includes promoting excellence in learning and teaching and developing and implementing sound strategies in the context of contemporary learning and teaching practice, the RMIT Strategic Plan and the Academic Plan.
In particular the Deputy Dean, Learning & Teaching will provide leadership in all aspects of program renewal and ongoing enhancements such as program design, delivery, assessment, quality assurance; and learning and teaching pedagogy. The position is responsible for ensuring that the School programs and courses have comparable and equivalent standard irrespective of the mode or location of delivery; are complaint with external reference points; and provide a high quality of student experience.
The position involves innovating, influencing, facilitating and mentoring, as well as strategy development and change management.
The Deputy Dean, Learning & Teaching is a member of the School executive team and is required to work collaboratively with all members of the School management team and with staff across the school to ensure that the School achieves its strategic objectives.
The position has a close working relationship with the College Deputy PVC Learning & Teaching and the Deputy Dean’s of the Disciplines and VET.
The Deputy Dean, Learning & Teaching will also work closely with the Deputy Dean, International to develop and implement the Schools L&T international objectives.
It is expected that the time fraction for the leadership role will be approximately 60%. The other component of the role will comprise of teaching and/or research as agreed with the Dean of School.

Key Accountabilities
- Lead the implementation of the University Academic Plan within the School.
- Promote and develop a culture of learning and teaching within the School that ensures programs that are high quality, relevant and viable through building staff capability and knowledge; encouraging scholarship and collaboration; and recognising and sharing good practice.
- Lead the School’s Learning & Teaching quality assurance process including compliance with regulatory requirements and management and implementation of student complaints, appeals and feedback policies and procedures.
- Provide leadership in best practise in program design, delivery, assessment and work integrated learning and work with program teams to develop and implement program improvement initiatives.
- Ensure quality, viability and relevance of all academic programs by overseeing the development of new programs, amendments to programs and discontinuation of existing programs based on market needs.
- Ensure effective student feedback policies and processes.
- Work with the Deputy Dean, International to develop and implement the School’s L&T internationalisation objectives.
- Will work closely with the College Deputy PVC Learning & Teaching to ensure quality of programs and the ongoing maintenance of standards of education outcomes.
- Identify staff L&T development needs, develop appropriate strategies and advise on development needs to inform staff work planning.
- Chair the School Learning and Teaching Committee and Student progress Committees/ Program Assessment Boards and effectively represent the School in College level learning and teaching activities, forums and committees.
- Undertake the scholarship of learning and teaching and assist staff in undertaking research on learning and teaching in order to enable best practice in the School.
- Maintain academic and professional standing and currency by engaging in a program of academic and professional activity and development.
- Undertake teaching and research as appropriate and as negotiated with the Dean of School.
Key Selection Criteria
- Strong leadership skills and ability to provide Learning and Teaching leadership and expertise that will contribute to improved Learning and Teaching outcomes.
- Strong record of innovative teaching in a discipline relevant to the School underpinned by an understanding of contemporary Learning and Teaching theory.
- Up to date knowledge and understanding of University and Government strategies and priorities in relation to Learning and Teaching.
- Experience in initiating, leading and managing projects to deliver strategic objectives.
- Capacity to think strategically and to act tactically based on organisational priorities and objectives.
- High level interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills including the ability to consult, network and build relationships within the organisation and externally.
- Ability to work effectively in a collegiate environment and to develop and achieve shared goals and objectives and to negotiate agreed directions and outcomes.
- Strong track record in research in an area of relevance to the School and a commitment to the scholarship of learning and teaching.
Qualifications
PhD or demonstrated equivalence, combined with knowledge and achievements that meet the professorial criteria
