OBJECTIVES:

Students will apply knowledge of the Latin language and culture in applications of Latin and Graeco-Roman culture found in and through art and literature.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS:

Resources may include textbooks, Internet, primary sources on mythology, e.g., Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and secondary sources, e.g., Edith Hamilton’s Mythology and Pierre Grimal’s Dictionary of Classical Mythology.

PROCEDURE/IMPLEMENTATION:

Key myths: Deucalion and Pyrrha (Met. 1.313-415), Daphne and Apollo (Met. 1.452-567), Narcissus and Echo (Met. 3.339-510), Pyramus and Thisbe (Met. 4.55-166), Proserpina (Met. 5.346-671), Arachne (Met. 6.1-145), Daedalus and Icarus (Met. 8.183-235), Orpheus and Eurydice (Met. 10.1-77), Pygmalion (Met. 10.238-297), Midas (Met. 11.85-145),

1.  The teacher and students will discuss the use of mythological allusions in art, literature, and music.

2.  The teacher will put students in small groups of two to three.

3.  The teacher will assign or allow groups to choose one Ovidian myth to research.

4.  The small groups will research their myths. They should find at least ten examples of art, literature, or music containing allusions to their myths.

5.  The small groups will give multimedia presentations to the rest of the class. The groups may use presentational software (e.g., PowerPoint), color transparencies, or musical recordings.
