Bussy: / Hi! My name is Bussy. Can you guess what I am?That’s right! I’m a school bus. Lots of children ride me to and from school every day. How many of you ride a school bus to school? Let’s all gofor a ride to learn about school bus safety!
Bussy: / Every morning, I start my day at the school bus yard where I pick up my driver, Mrs. Garcia. Here she comes now. Hi, Mrs. Garcia, how are you today?
Mrs. Garcia: / I’m fine, Bussy. Let me check you out and make sure you are safe and ready to roll!(Mrs. Garcia checks Bussy’s tires and mirrors) You look good, Bussy!Let’sroll!
(Bussy and Driver move to look like they are driving down a street.)
Mrs. Garcia: / Here we come to our first stop. All the children are standing at least 10 feet from the curb. That is the safe place to stand when waiting for the bus. Let’s turn on your flashing red lights and stop.
Bussy: / Texas law says all cars must stop while a school bus has its red flashing lights on no matter what side of the street the car is on.[1]
Students: / Good morning, Mrs. Garcia!
Bussy: / My students all respect Mrs. Garcia. They are polite and follow her directions. We are one of the best bus teams at my school.
Mrs. Garcia: / Students use the handrail and take your seat. (Students get on bus) Prepare to roll!
Bussy: / My students sit still and don’t fool around when in the bus so Mrs. Garcia can pay attention to the road.
Mrs. Garcia: / Everyone is on. Now, I will close the doors and turn off the red flashers and we are ready to roll. Let’s go! (Bus moves like it is driving down a street.)
Bussy: / Here comes a railroad crossing. The law in Texas says all busses have to stop at railroad crossings to make sure a train isn’t coming before they cross.[2](Display railroad crossing sign)
Bussy: / Then, I drop off all the children at school and come back for them after school is over to take them home.
Bussy: / Getting off the bus safely and crossing the street around a bus is very important. Let’s see how my bus team does it.
Mrs. Garcia: / OK, here is our first stop. Turn on your red flashing lights, Bussy. Children remember to exit the bus slowly making sure you have all your stuff. Use the hand rail to climb down from the bus.
Bussy: / Take 5 giant steps from the bus or get in a place so the bus driver can see you. If you have to cross the street, look both ways or wait for the bus driver to signal you to cross the street.
(Students and Mrs. Garcia demonstrate those actions)
Bussy: / Now, let’s see if you learned enough to be on my bus team.
