TEXTS: Leadership Education I, Aerospace Science; AFJROTC Cadet Handbook, Drill and Ceremonies Guide, Presidential Fitness Challenge Guide.

Dear Cadets and Parents/Guardians,

Air Force Junior ROTC is more than just another class. Cadets are expected to work to develop themselves as excellent scholars; positive, supportive leaders; and citizens of character dedicated to serving their communities. Cadets who strive for success as scholars, leaders, and citizens will find many doors open to opportunities not available to other students at Bessemer City High School.

We have high, yet attainable standards. It is important to understand that the nature of the AFJROTC mission, as well as its high visibility within the school and the community, requires its members to adhere to higher academic and behavior standards than might normally be found among the student body.

Participation in Air Force Junior ROTC is a privilege. Cadets who apply themselves to the academic program and mandatory participatory activities, wear the uniform properly each week, and demonstrate the qualities of a lady or gentleman should have no difficulty.

Throughout the school year, the emphasis in AFJROTC will be on developing leadership, followership, teamwork, poise, and self confidence. AFJROTC strives to develop young adults who are independently responsible with high levels of personal honor, self-discipline, initiative, attention to detail, and concern for others and their community. Our curriculum and grading policies support these objectives.

Cadets will begin the school year by receiving a thorough review (in class) of the guidelines and expectations of the Bessemer City High School AFJROTC course that are explained in the Cadet Guide. Each cadet will receive their own copy of the Cadet Guide once the review has been accomplished. Parents and Cadets can also view the Cadet Guide at: http://lanier.bcss.schoolinsites.com (click on CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS in the left hand column, click on AFJROTC under clubs and organizations, click on FORMS).

Course Descriptions: AIR FORCE JUNIOR ROTC

Academic: AFJROTC Leadership Education and Aviation History: 35% of Overall Grade

The two main textbooks used in the academic portion for cadets are Leadership Education I; Citizenship, Character & Air Force Tradition, and the Science of Flight; A Journey into Aviation History. The goal is two-fold; acquaint each cadet with the historical development of flight, leadership, history of the Air Force, and to prepare cadets for life both during and after high school. Cadets will explore their responsibilities as both students and members of our community, as well as, how they fit in society as a whole.

Aerospace Science Course is designed to acquaint the students with the historical
development of flight and the role of the military in history. About three quarters of the
available classroom hours are spent reviewing the development of flight from ancient
legends through the Persian Gulf War and beyond. Additionally, the role of the military
throughout the history of our country is identified and discussed.

Leadership Education is the portion of the curriculum that develops leadership skills and
acquaints students with the practical applications of life skills. Leadership Education
emphasizes discipline, responsibility, leadership, followership, citizenship, custom and
courtesies, cadet corps activities, study habits, time management, and communication skills.

Cadets must sign for and be responsible for all issued uniform items. It is the responsibility of the Cadet to have the uniform dry cleaned throughout the school year. Cadets will be charged a nominal activity fee that will take care of end of year cleaning. Cadets are not charged for items damaged through fair wear and tear. Cadets who lose or negligently destroy uniform items must repay Department of the Air Force. Cadets will not be allowed to take final exams until uniforms are turned in.

UNIFORM DAY:

Wear of the AFJROTC Cadet uniform is MANDATORY. Wearing the uniform will start after the uniform is issued and upon the order of the AFJROTC commander. Wear days are each Tuesday unless announced otherwise in class; make-up day is Wednesdays (minus 20 points in addition to any discrepancies). Cadets who refuse to wear the AFJROTC uniform (all day, to all classes on their respective day) without prior approval from their instructor and/or violate uniform policies will receive a grade of zero.

Exception 1: Cadets who are absent on Uniform Day must wear their uniform the next class day. Cadets with a school-approved excuse will receive full credit, minus any discrepancies. Cadets without an approved excuse will be given a 20 point reduction in addition to any discrepancies. It is the sole responsibility of the cadet to make-up any missed uniform days. Friday is not an acceptable uniform make-up day.

NOTE: Refusal to wear your issued AFJROTC uniform will result in a failing grade as it will affect three of four performance components. (See ‘Grading Procedures’ below)

Cadets should expect their parents or guardians to be contacted for habitual failure to wear the AFROTC uniform.

Parents: Please contact me if you have any questions about these uniform policies.

Compliance with Standards (10% of overall grade)

Compliance with standards will be based on a merit and demerit system. All cadets begin the 9 weeks with 100 points. They lose points (demerits) for infractions (e.g., talking in class, eating in class, out of uniform, etc…) as the 9 weeks progresses. They can gain points (merits) for such actions as; assisting with drill and ceremony, answering curriculum questions right during inspection, and wearing their uniform properly to name a few.

GRADING PROCEDURES

FIELD TRIPS AND EXTRA- CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

AFJROTC will attempt to take field trips each school year. Only a limited number of cadets are allowed, usually on a first come (sign up and fee payment) basis. School conduct and behavior will be a determining factor in accepting cadets for field trips. We also celebrate our annual Dining-In and Military Ball. Class participation, performance, and behavior are major factors in determining who may or may not participate in any of these extra curricular activities.

MATERIALS

The following is a list of materials cadets will need. Failure to have these items will result in missed assignments and a reduction in grade.

1.  Spiral notebook with perforated paper.

2.  Pen or pencil

BEHAVIOR

Integrity First, Service before self, and Excellence in all we do are the core values of the U.S. Air Force and AFJROTC. To achieve this standard we have set high, yet attainable goals. We expect the best from our cadets. To that end, all school polices regarding student behavior will be strictly enforced.

Violating the following rules will result in a DISCIPLINARY REFERRAL and could lead to REMOVAL from AFJROTC (Removal procedures are at the end of the syllabus):

·  Cell phones (will be handled according to school policy).

·  Eating, drinking, or chewing gum in class.

·  Being tardy 3 times (student will get a disciplinary referral for each tardy after the 3rd one)

·  Excessive talking and failing to follow instructions.

·  Leaving the classroom without permission.

·  Not respecting classmates

SUMMARY

Cadets will successfully complete this class by putting forth the necessary effort. Any cadet who needs help can see his/her instructor before, during, or after school. Studies have shown that cadets who excel in AFJROTC usually excel in life.

AFJROTC Program Removal Procedures

The AFJROTC program is a program dedicated to building character, leadership, and good citizenship. Every effort will be made to ensure each cadet successfully completes our program. However, we will not allow students who are poor examples, disrespectful of the character values inherent in the program and failure to meet dress and grooming standards to remain as cadets. They will be removed from the program. Disenrollment procedures are as follows: (All actions taken will be documented)

1.  When students are failing to meet the above standards, the instructor and appropriate cadet leaders will meet with student and inform them of their performance and pending action if standards are not met. A call will be made to the student’s parents. This will be a documented meeting.

2.  If student fails to show improvement, the student will meet with their instructor, school counselor, and school administrator to seek a viable solution to student’s poor performance. At this time student will be informed that if they fail to improve they will be immediately removed from the program. A parent will be informed of this meeting.

3.  If after this meeting, the student continues to fail to show improvement, the SASI will remove student from the AFJROTC program.
