Welcome and Introductions

Committee Chair Susan Mangin called the meeting to order at 3 pm with introductions.

Review of the Minutes of the Previous Meeting

After reviewing the June 21, 2013 minutes, a motion was made to approve the minutes as written. The motion was seconded and unanimously carried.

Director/Division Chair Report

CADD Professor Keith Stansbury reported that his sabbatical was about renewable energy. He told the committee that now you can buy solar panels that output 120 Volts at 60 hz. The panels no longer need to be inverted as in the past, because they have an integral micro-inverter already installed. You still need to go through EPUD to be legal but it’s now much simpler and you don’t need to be or hire an engineer to design the electrical system.

Keith also reported on the NASA USLI Aerospace club competition. He supported 9 students who traveled to Huntsville, AL, for the competition. They test launched a 53 pound payload & launch vehicle. He said their target height was one mile (5200 feet) and the vehicle went 5500 feet! Since the test launch was at a significantly higher altitude than the competition launch, it was expected that the test launch reach 5500 feet AGL for a lower altitude launch to reach 5280 AGL.

Committee Chair and Adjunct Susan Mangin showed the committee the new, updated CADD classroom (AA4 204). She explained the changes and said she thinks this new design will work much better for the students. She added that besides the labor of making these changes, the cost is minimal. She asked for a motion to approve the changes to classroom AA4 204. The motion was seconded and it was approved unanimously.

An experiment took place to implement a hybrid course (ENGR/CADD 140). The lectures were available online so that students could watch more them than once. Susan shared that it was harder for her to adjust than the students. She said that the younger students latched on quickly and liked it a lot; however the older students seemed more intimidated by computer based curriculum and the dropout rate was a bit higher, but all in all most students liked it.

Work Plan

Susan worked through the work plan with the committee.

Internships: Susan said in June committee members were asked to compile a list of companies who use CADD. She asked the members to send her a list prior to the next meeting and she will compile the list and have it ready for review and approval by next meeting. Timeline is December 2013.

Examine and provide input for classroom and equipment needs for program. Keith offered to continue to monitor the capabilities of the current software and also explore new software options. Timeline is June 2014.

Curriculum improvement: After some discussion of the current curriculum, a subcommittee was formed to work with Tina Barsotti to help create an AAS degree. Besides Tina, the members are Susan and Ron Lermo.

New Business

Certificate changes:

Keith gave committee members a handout that explained the requested changes to the certificate programs. Primary changes are:

1.  Modify the courses Architectural Drafting 1 w/AutoCAD (CADD 141); Civil Drafting 1 w/AutoCAD (CADD 143); and Mechanical Drafting 1 w/AutoCAD by removing the “AutoCAD” content of these three courses and put it into a new course. The new course would be a 2-credit, intermediate AutoCAD course (CADD 142), as it is taking half of the course material away from each of the three courses mentioned above. Then, the three courses would be modified. Further, Keith said, since Mechanical Drafting 1 w/SolidWorks (CADD 154) already has half of the same content, CADD 144 can be deleted entirely, as long as the new 2 credit course is created. This would reduce the total number of credits for the mechanical certificate to 51. A motion was made to proceed to remove the AutoCAD content from both CADD 141 and CADD 143 and create a new 2-credit course, CADD 142. Another motion was made to remove CADD 144 completely from the program. Both motions were seconded and the motions were approved unanimously by the committee.

2.  After some discussion about CADD 145 and CADD 141, a motion was made to delete Architectural Desktop (CADD 145) and incorporate this content into CADD 141. The motion was seconded and approved by the committee unanimously.

3.  Keith went on to explain that since CADD 145 is being deleted, a new course be created and that course will be Revit: Commercial (CADD 171). Further, he said, Basic Revit should be changed to Basic Revit: Residential (CADD 170) and CADD 170 should be a prerequisite to CADD 171. If this is approved by the committee, then the name of CADD 171 will be Revit: Commercial. A motion was made to make Basic Revit: Residential a prerequisite to a newly, to be created course, Revit: Commercial (CADD 171). The motion was seconded and approved by the committee unanimously.

4.  Keith requested that the committee approve creating a new course that utilizes the simulation within the SolidWorks software. This class can also be a transfer class for a 4 year degree. This would be ENGR 216, Integrated Computational Design. (This would be a transferable engineering course similar to WSU’s ME 21 course). A motion was made for Keith to move forward with Tina to create this class. The motion was seconded and the committee unanimously approved the motion.

New Program Development

Keith suggested that the CADD program have a 2-year degree. The main reason is:

Currently, the three current CADD program certificates are not eligible for Financial Aid. Keith said the reason for this is that when they originally split from a single 45-47 credit certificate to three 52-53 credit certificates currently being offered, it turned out that the program needed a higher proportion of courses within the certificates to be transferable into a 2-year degree. He said that if there is at least one 2 year degree that the certificates can transfer into, then the certificates will be eligible for Financial Aid. This will have a direct, positive impact on enrollment.

A motion was made in support of Keith continuing to examine a 2-year degree(s). A blanket vote to approve moving forward on three 2-year degrees and the modifications of the certificates to support the degrees. The motion was seconded and the committee approved the motion unanimously.

Susan wants these items to go on the work plan. The “timeline” is the next advisory meeting in December 2013.

Next Meeting Date

The next meeting date was scheduled Friday, December 13, 2013. After some discussion about the time of the meeting it was agreed by the members that 3—5 pm would be best for all.

The meeting adjourned at 5:21 pm.
