Managing innovation in organizations

Module tutor: Jarle Moss Hildrum

The aim of this module is to introduce the students to different ways in which private and public organizations manage or otherwise tackle the practice of innovation.During the lectures the students will be introduced to theoretical topics such as organizational learning, innovation process management and the coordination of inter-firm innovation collaborations. We will explore how organizations can use concepts from advertising and design to facilitate internal innovation processes. We will also investigate how innovation can be understood and measured in public sector organizations. In addition, we will examine how resources outside the boundaries of organizations – such as open source communities and public R&D – can affect innovation processes inside organizations.

The module has a strong practical orientation: We will visit three of the largest innovation-active firms in Norway - Telenor, Statkraft and DNV - and discuss how the practice of innovation is handled there. The students will be asked to relate what they have learnt at the TIK course so far directly to some of the innovation challenges that the companies are currently experiencing. Finally, the module incorporates two methodological lecturesaimed at giving the students a flying start in planning and carrying out empirical research for their master theses. These methodological lectures will serve as a preparation for the TIK 4040 methodology course in 2012.
