Treasure Hunt – Library Media Artifact #2

Treasure Hunt #1 is a quiz that instructs students to use given resources to answer questions about evaluating reference resources. Question #11 instructs students to explore oyate.com and to use this site to answer the following question…

Oyate is an organization that is commonly referred to by librarians looking for help in evaluating Native American resources. Under the “Books to Avoid” section, what are the two main selection criteria on the “Oyate Criteria for Evaluating Books” page?

Treasure Hunt #1: Bibliographies, Directories, Almanacs, Yearbooks, and Handbooks

Treasure Hunt #1 will be available for you beginning October 6 and is due at 11:55 p.m. MT time on October 19. The Treasure Hunt is in the form of this Moodle quiz. You may access the quiz as many times as you want to. At the bottom of the quiz is a "save without submitting button." If you press that and then exit the quiz and return later, your saved answers will still be there.

Use the given reference sources below to answer questions 1-16 in Treasure Hunt #1. Don’t use any other sources except for the sources given below. If you have trouble with a question, contact me for clues. Exploring these sources will not only help you to learn about these particular sources, but more importantly, will give you experience in navigating resources and identifying helpful search features, such as site maps.

Answer each question, and then cite the source you used to find your answer. Use the reference citations that I provide for you below rather than composing your own complete citations.

For example, #2 asks you to find the most commonly grown type of blueberry in the USA.

You’ll answer and then below your answer you’ll provide the citation from the list below, which is…

The Old Farmer’s Almanac. (2012). Retrieved from http://www.almanac.com

Some of the sources have options to register for or purchase their products. To answer these quiz questions, you do not need to register for or purchase anything. Some answers may be found by using more than one source, but you only need to find the answer in one place.

To answer questions 17-20, go to the library that you have selected to use for this semester and find one example of each type of book. To answer those questions, write the reference citation for that book, according to APA style. Most of your citations will follow #27 on page 204 of your APA. Most libraries will have at least one of each type of book, but some libraries may not have one of each. Email me to let me know if your library doesn’t have something that you are looking for. Work independently on this assignment. Do not confer with your classmates about this assignment.
