HRBP Career Diagnostic Results Discussion Guide (Line Client)
Instructions: This HRBP Career Diagnostic Results Discussion Guide will help you discuss your HRBP Career Diagnostic results with your line client (likely the line leader of the business unit or department you support) and ensure you have a clear plan for acting on your HRBP Career Diagnostic results. Please also use the accompanying discussion guide to discuss your results with your direct manager.
For this conversation with your senior line client, the questions focus on the extent to which your support is effectively aligned to the leader’s business goals, as well as how you will provide strategic support to the business unit in the future (i.e., set expectations for your support).
The steps and discussion questions below are recommendations for getting your conversation started, but you may, of course, adapt them depending on what you would prefer to discuss.
Before Your Results Discussion
Consider performing these activities prior to the discussion to ensure you get the most out of the conversation.
¨  Review this guide and reflect on your own answers to these questions so that you will be ready to discuss and compare your thoughts on your results to your line client’s.
¨  Be open to feedback, and to listen to the feedback your line client shares about how you can improve your performance in your support of the business unit. However, also use this conversation to set expectations for the type of support (especially strategic support) that you’d like to provide your line clients.
¨  If your line client is unfamiliar with CEB’s HRBP Career Diagnostic, explain that this is a tool that allows you to evaluate your mastery of and the importance of activities core to your role as an HR Business Partner or HR Generalist.
Recommended Discussion Questions
¨  Do you think these results are accurate?
¨  Am I over- or under-evaluating my performance, whether in general or in any specific areas?
¨  Am I thinking about the importance of each activity correctly? Do you agree with my importance scoring across all of these activities given your business unit’s goals? If you had to highlight five activities from this list as most important given your business unit’s goals, what would you highlight?
¨  These are the priorities [insert the areas specific to your results] on which I want to focus my support in the coming 6-12 months. What is your reaction to these priorities?
¨  What are the most important ways I can improve?
¨  I plan on supporting your team in ______way. Does that fit with your expectation? If not, could you provide more detail on why this doesn’t fit with your expectations? How can we better align our expectations?
¨  What are your biggest challenges? How do those differ (if they do) from your team’s or the business unit’s goals?
¨  How do you want to change the way your team operates or fits into the business?
¨  What steps do you recommend I take immediately to provide better support to you and your team?
¨  What is your biggest takeaway from these results and this discussion?
Post-Discussion
Consider performing these few activities following the results discussion to ensure you are taking action and improving your performance.
¨  Revisit your results with your line client every 1-2 months to see if you’re improving in your higher priority development areas.
¨  Re-take the HRBP Career Diagnostic every 8-12 months, or if you experience any significant job changes, to recalibrate your performance and determine if your development priorities have changed.
