Restore is a medium sized charity. We employ about 40 staff, involve about 100 volunteers, and deliver services to about 1,000 people in Oxfordshire each year.

The Recovery College is an exciting new development in our service, using an educational model to support people to become experts in self-care and their recovery. All Recovery College courses are co-produced and co- delivered by Peer Tutors, who have their own experience of mental health challenges, alongside mental health professionals.

Overall Aims of the Post

Restore is working in partnership with Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, Response, Oxfordshire Mind, Connections Floating Support and Elmore Community Services to establish and deliver a Recovery College for people using the service, carers, staff and volunteers from these organisations.

The Tutor of the Recovery College will support the Head of Recovery College and Recovery College Coordinator inthe establishment and running of the Recovery College using a hub and spoke model. Central to this role is service user and carer involvement as the Recovery College will be based on the empowerment and transformational approach promoted by ImROC. This approach espouses involvement of service users to inform the strategic vision for the college, design and deliver training, and quality manage the delivery of courses in an educational rather than therapeutic setting. The Tutor will work within the Recovery College to assist in the co-production, design and delivery of a broad range of recovery focussed courses and workshops for a range of students, including service users, their relatives, supporters, carers, voluntary sector staff and others as appropriate. Delivery of courses will commence in October 2015.

Specific Responsibilities

  • To assist in engaging and involving stakeholders (service users, carers, volunteers, and staff from all the partnership organisations) in the Recovery College through events and communications
  • To create a recovery environment and promote the spirit of recovery, co-production and co delivery for all courses, presentations and workshops
  • To raise awareness of recovery language with all students
  • Hold responsibility forstudent support, initial assessment and development of Individual Learning Plans
  • To work alongside other practitioners and peer tutors in order to coproduce and co facilitate courses and workshops to a range of students
  • To ensure the college works within a coaching paradigm and adheres to the core principles of adult learning in all courses
  • To prepare venues for the delivery of courses in other settings ensuring Health and Safety Procedures and risk assessments are followed at all times
  • To communicate and consult with students, potential students and other stakeholders on the development of the service
  • To maintain professional relationships with students respecting their views, autonomy and culture
  • Liaising with the Recovery College Co-ordinator, provide any information or support required for course timetabling, prospectus, booking of tutors and venues
  • Support the collation of feedback and evaluation processes implementing changes where necessary ensuring decisions are made in a co-productive manner
  • Share the responsibility for the recruitment, training and support of peer trainers
  • As part of the Recovery College Team, share responsibility for the storage, management and use of data relating to the Recovery College
  • Carry out any administrative duties that are required to ensure the smooth and effective running of the Recovery College
  • To model the principles and practices of the Recovery College throughout the partnership
  • To work flexibly, including some evenings and weekends, covering colleagues’ absence

PERSON SPECIFICATION: Tutor Oxfordshire Recovery College

An understanding of the sector, a commitment to recovery practices and empathy with people with mental health problems is vital. Restore needs people who have the ability to cope with limited resources, seize opportunities and think creatively. Awareness of the stigma and other issues surrounding mental illness is important, as is the ability to remain impartial, as this role may involve working in potentially sensitive areas.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • An understanding of the principles of recovery from mental illness and the barriers that people with mental health problems may face when attempting to or accessing education
  • Experience of public speaking and delivering presentations
  • Experience of delivering or facilitating training in an educational or recovery based setting
  • Excellentlistening skills and communication skills (both written and verbal) with clear evidence of ability
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others and translate learning into effective and committed practice
  • Excellent time management skills with an ability to prioritise tasks
  • Awareness of and commitment to all aspects of anti-discriminatory practice
  • Experience working as part of a team
  • Willingness to undertake professional qualifications if required
  • A recognised education or training qualification
  • Proficient in the use Microsoft Office

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience of representing an organisation to a range of external audiences
  • Professional mental health qualification
  • Experience of delivering training in educational settings
  • Personal experience or understanding of mental health issues
  • Knowledge of Peer Support, Recovery and Wellbeing in mental health and ability to apply this throughout your work

Other work related criteria

  • Willing to undertake evening and weekend work when required
  • Willing to undertake regular travel within the county and occasionally elsewhere in the UK
