ForestryHealth & Safety Guidelines
Do not enter the instructional area unless the instructor is present.
  1. Ensure all district off-campus and off-site regulation documentation is complete.
  2. Report all dangers, incidents, any damaged tools or equipment, unsafe working environments, or injuries immediately.
  3. Know what to do in an emergency!
  4. Know the evacuation procedures.
  5. Communicate where you are going and when you expect to be back.
  6. Always carry a personal first aid kit in a wilderness situation.
  7. When using a GPS, always carry backup navigational tools (e.g., map, compass).
  8. Be aware of the limitations of your own skills and abilities.Do not take unnecessary risks.
  9. Always check for hazards related to the environment and equipment (e.g., UV exposure,wildlife encounters,changing weather conditions).
  10. No horseplay—report unsafe acts!
  11. Think safety! Do not go on a wilderness excursion
  • if you are tired.Stop and rest.
  • if you are rushed.Slow down.
  • if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  1. Respect yourself, others, the instructor, and the tools, equipment, and instructional area.
  2. If you feel unsafe about a particular activity, consult with your instructor before proceeding.
  3. Perform safety checks on yourself, surroundings, tools, equipment, or materials.
  4. Wear appropriate PPE (e.g., high-visibility jacket or vest in wilderness situations; protective footwear with non-slip soles; plastic or polycarbonate safety glasses; long-sleeve, tightly woven clothes).
  5. Use universal precautions when there is risk of exposure to blood or body fluids.
  6. Prevent unnecessary strain or injury by ensuring your pack is not too heavy and is adjusted properly.
  7. Be prepared to stay overnight in all wilderness situations.
  8. Identify, handle, store, or dispose of any hazardous materials using WHMIS regulations.
  9. Know the location of the MSDS for thematerials being used.
  10. Do not use any tools or equipment unless you have been properly trained and can demonstrate the safe use, operation, and shutdown procedures.
  11. Do not use any tools or equipment unless you have permission.
  12. Clean (and disinfect, if necessary) work areasand all tools and equipment as needed, returning all items, materials, projects, and PPE safely and securely to their proper storage locations.
  13. Adhere to all governing legislation with regards to forestry.
