ESL SUMMER ACADEMY 2014

Dear Principal,

The ESL Summer Academy for currently enrolled middle school students identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) will be held in June. The District provides a summer program for English language learners to accelerate their language development and content knowledge. The curriculum will focus on language development and essential knowledge and skills that address the affective, linguistic, and cognitive needs of students. The program is designed for students who are in their first three years in U.S. schools, and who continue to test as non-and limited English speakers on the Woodcock-Muñoz Language Survey.

What: ESL Summer Academy 2014

Who: Currently enrolled middle school identified LEP students

Recent immigrants (in U.S. 3 years or less) in 6th and 7th grade

Where: ESL Sites: Irving Middle School

When: June 9 – June 27, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Notification: The campus principal will send a Parent Notification Letter and a Student Enrollment Form to the parents.

Transportation: Students will be transported by bus from their home school and taken to the designated summer school site. The bus will return the students to the home school at the end of the day.

Clustered Schools: Students will attend the summer school site that receives students from the school in which they are enrolled.

Class Size: 25:1

Teachers: Certification required: ESL certification

Curriculum: The curriculum focuses on ESL, Science content with an emphasis on vocabulary and reading comprehension. In addition, instruction will be enhanced through the use of sheltered instructional strategies which will facilitate the acquisition of language and content.

Your child has been recommended to participate in the ESL Summer Academy 2014. He/she will attend the ESL Summer Academy at ______School, June 9 -June 27, 2014 from 8:30a.m.-3:00 p.m. Daily attendance is necessary so that your child gains the full benefit of the ESL Academy.

The academy will integrate ESL with Science content in order to provide students with vocabulary development and reading comprehension activites. The curriculum consists of thematic units loaded with instructional strategies and reading techniques that will facilitate learning in all classes.

Transportation will be provided from the home school to the designated summer school site. Students will be picked up at their home campus each morning. Buses will return students to their home campus each afternoon. Parents have the responsibility of ensuring that their son/daughter arrives at school on time each morning and is picked up on time each afternoon. Breakfast and lunch will be served daily at summer school.

Please complete the Student Enrollment Form and return it to the school by April 21, 2014. If accepted, your son/daughter will receive an Acceptance Letter before the end of the school year. We appreciate the support and interest you have shown in your child’s academic achievement. Please do not hesitate to call our office if you have any questions regarding the summer program. Asistirá a la escuela ______desde el 9 de junio hasta el 27 de junio, de las 8:30 a.m. a las 3:00 p.m. Es importante que su hijo / hija asista todos los días para que se beneficie de este programa.

Las clases de inglés como segundo idioma integrarán los objetivos de inglés como segundo idioma y ciencias para que los estudiantes aumenten su vocabulario académico y comprensión de lectura. El currículo consiste de unidades de estudio utilizando estrategias instruccionales y técnicas de lectura que ayudarán a facilitar el aprendizaje en todas las materias.

Habrá transportación de las escuelas secundarias a la escuela de verano. Los alumnos tendrán que llegar a la escuela a la que asisten durante el año escolar y serán regresados a esa escuela en la tarde. Es la responsabilidad de los padres que su hijo/hija llegue a tiempo diariamente a la escuela. También es la responsabilidad de los padres recoger a su hijo/a. El almuerzo y la comida serán ofrecidos diariamente en la escuela de verano.

Por favor, complete la matrícula y regrésela a la escuela para el 21 de abril de 2014. Si es aceptado, su hijo/a recibirá una carta de aceptación antes del último día de clases. Muchas gracias por su interés en este programa que resultará en el adelanto y desarrollo académico de su hijo / hija.
