World Food Fest Activity

Activity Date: Friday, March 6, 2015

Objective:Give students a feel for what it would be like to visit a foreign country by making food to sell to other language students at the time of the activity. Students will buy and sell food using the language phrases in each language as if they were truly in the country. Earning money & eating food is not the ultimate purpose of this activity, BUT TO USE THE LANGUAGE OUTLOUD.

Standard:COMMUNICATION: Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feeling and emotions, and exchange opinions.

CULTURES: Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied.

Requirements:

1.Student groups [withno more than 5 people] will explore types of food representing the people who speak the language you are learning,and choose a type of food that no other group is preparing. Teacher will provide lists to sign up on so food is different.

3.All group members will contribute moneyand/or ingredients to create the food that comes from the culture of the language studied. No already cooked food is allowed like from L&L. However, most foods should be made at home before the event and brought ready to serve. Seek approval of teacher for any live cooking. No open fires of cooking half a cow, BBQ, etc.Groups may only sell one type of food.

4.Groups will need a small table or two chairs, table cloth, and signs for their “food booth” to identify the name of the food they are selling. Level 2-5 student groups will need to include the level they are at the top of the sign that displays their food. EX: Spanish Level 3&4 or Hawaiian Level 2.

6.On the day of the activity, each student will be given 15 “dollars” (euros, kālā, pesos, yen) in the language “money” to purchase items that other groups have made.

7.Each group will send out half of the group to buy for a 10 min. period while theothers remain behind. Every 10 min. for one hour the groups will rotate [each student will get three times to buy & sell]. Students must speak the language of the country they are buying the food from.Students in levels2-5 must carry on a conversation with those they are purchasing from [if it is their own language] by asking about a) the amount and type of ingredients, b) how it is made, and c) how long it takes to make it.

Grading Criteria for each student

Exceeds the StandardParticipates by selling items using the language of country they represent. They attempt to

(95% or above)use the language of the country they are buying food from. They participate in contributing money, making the food the group decides to make.

Meets the StandardParticipates by selling items using the language of country they represent. They attempt to

(70%~94%)use the language of the country they are buying food from. They only partially participate in contributing money or making the food the group decides to make.

Approaching the StandardSomewhat participates using the language of the country they represent. They somewhat

(50%~69%)attempt to use the language of the countrythey are buying food from. They only partially participate in contributing money or making the food the group decides to make.

Not Met the StandardOccasionally participates using the language of the country they represent. They occasionally

(1%~49%)or don’t attempt to use the language of the country they are buying food from. They only partially participate in contributing money/making the food the group decides to make. Only interested in eating.
