Background

TheConsortium forAdvancedResearchTrainingin Africa(CARTA)isaninitiativeof nine Africanuniversities,fourAfricanresearchinstitutes,andselectnorthernpartners.CARTAoffers aninnovativemodelfordoctoraltraining insub-Saharan Africato strengthenthecapacityof participating institutionsto conductandlead internationally-competitive research.

Themulti-disciplinary CARTAprogram isopentostaffofparticipatinginstitutions who are interested inconducting theirPhD researchontopicsrelevant tothebroadfieldsofpublicand populationhealth.Wewelcomeapplications fromany discipline,suchaspublichealth, demography,anthropology,communication,and economics,amongothers,aslongasthe researchquestionaims to contribute to publicand populationhealthissuesin Africa.

Overthemedium-term,CARTAaimstoproduceacriticalmassofhigh-qualitygraduatestrained toaddressthecomplexissues surroundinghealthanddevelopment in Africa, retaintheminthe region,andprovidethemwithavibrantintellectual environment,aswellasviableand challenging researchandgrowthopportunities. CARTAaimstoachievereformsinhigher educationby:

1.Assistinguniversitiestodevelopenrichingandvibrantacademicandresearchenvironments;

and

2.SupportingpromisingAfricanscholarswhoteachataffiliateduniversitiestoobtainhigh-

quality doctoral traininginpublicand population health-relatedfields.

CARTAiscurrentlyofferingacollaborativedoctoraltrainingprogramin publicandpopulation health.Thisprogramhasbeendevelopedin responsetothegreatchallengesfacedbyAfrica’s institutionsofhighereducationinaddressingthetrainingandretentionofthenextgenerationof academics inthe region.Womenareparticularlyencouraged toapply.

Specifically,CARTAseekstofundcandidateswhowillbefutureleadersintheirinstitutions;that is,young,capable,andcommittedindividualswho,intime,willensurethattheiruniversities

willbetheinstitutionsofchoicefor futuregenerationsofacademicsanduniversity administrators wishingto makea positiveimpacton public and populationhealthinAfrica.

Successfulapplicants willattendCARTA’s innovativeseries of Joint Advanced Seminars (JAS) forcohortsofdoctoralstudentsadmittedandregisteredinthe participatingAfrican universities. Boththedevelopmentanddeliveryofthesecourses arejointly-ledby regionaland international experts.Theseminarsconsistofdidacticsessions,discussions,demonstrations,andpracticelabs. Theseactivities collectively serveto:

1.Exposestudentstokeytheoriesandconcepts,seminalreadings,andresearchmethodsof

disciplines relevant to publicand population health;

2. Trainstudents incritical researchskills; and

3.Buildandmaintainanetworkofresearchersforscientificcollaborations,professionalsupport,

and mutuallybeneficialexchangeof scientificresources.

Theadvancedseminarsareofferedonceannuallyforfouryearsto each cohortandbuildskills andconceptualdepthfromyeartoyear.EachJASrunsfor3to4weeks.Specifictopicscovered ineachJASincludethefollowing:

JAS-1buildscriticalthinking,technicalskills,andothercoreresearchcompetencies,and introducestudentstotheessentialconceptsandseminalarticlesofthedisciplinesbrought togetherunderCARTA

JAS-2focusesondatamanagementandanalysis.Fellowslearntousesoftwarepackages forqualitativeandquantitativedatamanagementandanalyses.Practice sessionsusereal researchdata andcurrent software packagesforhands-ontraining

JAS-3focusesondatapresentation,thedoctoraldissertation,andscientificwritingand communicationskills to facilitate results disseminationand policyengagement

JAS-4addressesprofessionaldevelopmentincludingskillsnecessarytomanageandteach largeclasssizes,raiseandmanageresearchfunds,grantwriting and research management. JAS-4 isalsodesigned toserveas anopportunity forseniorfellowsto practicementoringof juniorfellowsthroughdiscussionsandlaboratorysessions, softwaretraining,and general informationsharing.

Duringthe2016/2017academicyear,theCARTAprogramisplanning toofferupto25PhD fellowships.TheFellowship, whichistenableat oneoftheparticipating Africanuniversities, includesthecostoffellows’participationintheadvanced seminars; amodest monthlystipend; smallgrants forresearchactivities; a laptoploaded withrelevant software; fundsfortravelto conferences,aswellascostsforparticipating injointprogramactivities.Thefellowship runs for amaximumoffouryears.Fellowshipscovertuitionfees,medicalinsurance,andotheruniversity feesinspecialcircumstancesonly.Partnerinstitutionshave committedtocontinue paying Fellows’salaries(orequivalent)andtomodify workloads forthefellowstoenablethemto fully participateinCARTA organized activitiespertaining totheirPhD programand alsoto concentrate ontheirPhDstudies.Fellowsareencouragedtoseeksupplementalfundingtocover additional costs of theirdoctoral program.

Eligibility

 AMastersdegree inarelevantfield.

PrioradmissionintoaPhDprogramisnotrequiredforapplicationbutawardsare contingentonsuchadmissionbeingobtained atoneoftheparticipating African universities.

 Applicantsforthisprogrammustbeteachingorresearchstaffatoneoftheparticipating

African institutionsandshould becommitted tocontributing towards building capacity at theirinstitutions.

 Applicants’PhDresearchproposal must be related to publicand population health.

FellowshipsareonlyopentopeoplewhohavenotyetregisteredforaPhDorareinthe very early stages(firstyear)of the PhDprogram.

ApplicantsmustcommittoparticipationinallfourannualresidentialJointAdvanced Seminars (JASes), andtoengageininter-seminaractivitiesdesigned to keep fellows activelyengaged and incontinualcommunicationwithpeersand mentors.

Maleapplicantsmustbeundertheageof40yearsandfemaleapplicantsundertheage45 years.

4. Successful applicants at theuniversity selectionlevel will be expected to:
