From the Office

February is a great month! Love is in the air. It is a short month. We get a feel for how much winter we have left from the Groundhog from Punxsutawney, PA. The Olympics start and end in this month! So much going on…be sure to not forget about exercising. Since this month has been termed Heart Month, let’s talk about why it’s so important.
Did you know that exercise could help reduce the number of risk factors you have for potentially developing coronary artery disease? What can exercise do to help make your heart healthier? It can help lower your heart rate, with a regular exercise routine. It can help lower your cholesterol and glucose levels. It can help lower your blood pressure. It can lower your body composition. It can reduce the sedentary risk factor. Exercise can help with most of the modifiable risk factors. Your heart is an important part of your body and one that you should cherish.
Is exercise everything? No. It is all a balancing act. You must also take a look at what you are ingesting, both food and drink wise. There are extra calories in pops, alcohol, and juice. Portion sizes are something you should take into account. What types of food you are eating. Are you eating donuts, cakes, pastries or healthier options such as fruits, vegetables, and Greek yogurt?
Tracking your exercise is great! Tracking your food intake is great too! Fitday.com is a great resource. Myfitnesspal.com is also. They are free and ways to help yourself keep track of things you are doing and eating, as I mentioned before it is all about balance. Moderation is key.
Love your heart. It is what keeps you going. Take care of it. Let’s make it a great month!
February is American Heart Month
The heart is one of the most important organs in our body. Did you know…
  • Your heart beats about 100,000 times per day.
  • Your heart rate can drop well below your resting heart rate when you sleep. This is due to metabolism slowing down and an increase of your parasympathetic nervous system to help yourself remain calm during sleep.
  • Depression increases your risk of heart attack.
  • Your heart is one giant pump. It can pump roughly 5 quarts of blood through your vessels each minute.

Familiarizing with the Zero Runner

Many of you have noticed that we obtained a new piece of equipment over the winter break. The Zero Runner is designed to simulate the motion of running without the impact of the treadmill or road. The Zero Runner also gives you information about your stride length and height for each leg so that you can better improve your running performance. There are a total of eight pre-programmed workout plans, or you can run solo and run your own manual plan. With any new piece of equipment, there is always the risk of injury, so please ask a GA or intern for assistance if you would like to try it out. We hope you enjoy this machine and expand your aerobic horizons.

“If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.”
