Scenario

On 20 May 2015 Wesfarmers Ltd. held a Strategy Briefing Day in Sydney. The slides for the day’s presentations are in a pdf file called Strategy Briefing Day Presentation available from http://www.wesfarmers.com.au/investors (on the Results and Presentations tag). There are 260 slides in the file containing many charts and tables and facts and figures that summarise many aspects of the company’s operations. Your task is to critically evaluate representations of information in the presentations and prepare a media release that summarises material in a form suitable for retail shareholders (colloquially known as “Mum and Dad” shareholders).

On the Wesfarmers web site are other reports you may use to guide your work. For example, on the Results and Presentations tag at http://www.wesfarmers.com.au/investors is a summary of Wesfarmers results for the

2014-15 financial year (called 2015 Full-year Results Presentation) and on the Reports

tag you’ll find their annual report and a review.

Requirement 1: Evaluate Presentations

Step 1.a. Develop evaluation criteria

Your evaluation criteria need to stipulate the guidelines, or rules, you would use in establishing whether a chart or table can readily understood by a retail shareholder.

Your criteria may be in dot-point format and should address approximately 20 ideas. Step 1.b. Evaluate the Strategy Briefing Day Presentation presentations

Apply the evaluation criteria you developed in Step 1.a to critique between 12 to 15

charts or tables in Wesfarmers 20 May 2015 Strategy Briefing Day Presentation. You

must select a diverse range of charts and tables and include ones that are appropriate and ones that may be potentially misleading.

Note: Ensure that your reasoning in evaluating the charts and tables is consistent with the criteria developed in Step 1.a.

It is expected that your written report for Step 1.b be approximately 2 to 4 pages

(single spaced, normal fonts and margins, excluding any tables and/or graphs).

Requirement 2: Write a Media Release

Write a media release summarising important information in Wesfarmers Strategy Briefing Day Presentation with a specific target audience in mind: the so-called “Mum and Dad” or retail shareholders. In other words, the summary needs to be written in plain, easy-to-understand language. If you consider it absolutely necessary to include any jargon, then it must be explained in an appropriate manner.

Your media release should be a stand-alone document (i.e., it should not refer to any other document) and be no more than 2 pages in length and be free of any charts or tables.

Submission

Your completed assignment should be a single Word document divided into three sections:

A. Evaluation Criteria (requirement 1, step 1.a)

B. Evaluation of Presentations (requirement 1, step 1.b) C. Media release (requirement 2)

The assignment is to be submitted to CloudDeakin before 11:59 pm on Monday 7

December, 2015. Please name the document using the format yourstudentid.docx.

If you need to request an extension, please email the Unit Chair () by no later than 12 midday on Friday 4 December, 2015. You will need to provide a valid reason together with supporting documentation (e.g. doctors’ certificate) as well as the work you have completed to date.
