Requisitos del curso (Course Requirements):

·  10 % Participación (Participation): Active participation is required of all students. You are expected to come to class prepared, having done all assignments and to participate with your classmates in pair, group and class activities. Participation will be recorded every class period. You will receive a zero for participation for any day you are not in class whether your absence is excused or unexcused.

·  5 % Actividades culturales (Cultural Activities): All students are required to attend three cultural activities during the semester. Cultural activities include lectures, movies, plays, concerts, and other events that are related to Latin American or Spanish culture. To receive credit for attending a cultural event you must submit to your instructor a program or receipt and a half-page typed description and evaluation of the event in Spanish. This must be submitted within one week of having attended the event or you will not receive credit for it.

Further information on cultural activities, including information regarding specific events you can attend, can be found online on the Dept. of English and

Modern Languages’ web site at http://www.longwood.edu/english/. From this page click

on the link for “modern language program” and then scroll down to and click

on the link to “Actividades culturales” . If you wish to attend an event not listed on the

above website you must first obtain permission from the instructor.

·  40% Exámenes (Exams): There will be four exams during the course of the semester, as specified on the class schedule. All exams will cover the areas of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar, writing, vocabulary and culture as well as written assessment of communicative skills. No make-up exams will be given.

·  15% Examen final (Final Exam): This will be comprehensive and will be identical in format to the three partial exams during the semester. The final exam will be given on the date stipulated in the University’s exam schedule.

·  5% Entrevista oral final (Final Oral Interview): Students will meet individually with the instructor at a prearranged time at the end of the semester for the final interview. The instructor will distribute information regarding general topics two weeks before the scheduled dates of the oral interviews. Students will be required to answer questions as well as ask questions in Spanish.

·  5% Ensayos (Essays): There will be two in-class, graded writing assignments on topics to be announced the day they are written. These will include pre- and post-writing activities that will count toward the grade. If you are not in class the day an essay is done you will not be permitted to make it up.

·  20% Cuaderno de trabajo / manual de laboratorio (Workbook / Lab manual): There will be workbook and lab activities assigned for every chapter covered in this course. These activities reinforce material covered in class and provide practice in Spanish- language skills. Workbook and lab activities have to be done on-line and require a book key (purchased with textbook or may be purchased online) to access them. Students must check due dates online and must complete activities by that date. Do not wait until the last minute to complete these assignments. Technical difficulties will not be considered a valid excuse for not having completed any or all workbook and lab activities.

Workbook and lab exercises are graded so it is important for you to read and follow instructions carefully and to do them accurately. You should use your textbook when doing all activities, however you may not consult with anyone else to complete them.

Instructions for enrolling in the on-line workbook and lab manual are provided

with this syllabus. Be certain to register for the hour corresponding to the time your class

meets.

Calificaciones (Grading): The following grading scale will be used in this class:

90-100 A

80-89 B

70-79 C

60-69 D

Below 60 F

continued on next page à à à

Asistencia (Attendance): Regular attendance and punctuality are required. As per the Longwood University Undergraduate Catalog, any student who misses 10 percent of the scheduled class meetings for unexcused absences will have her/his grade lowered by one letter grade. There are 42 scheduled class meetings this semester so that missing 4.5 classes will result in your grade will be lowered by one letter grade. Any student who misses 25 percent of scheduled class meetings, 10.5 classes, will receive an “F” in the course whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Any instance of tardiness or early departure will be counted as half an absence. However, students who miss 25 minutes or more of a class period will be graded as absent for that class meeting.

Absences are considered excused when they result from participation in a college-sponsored activity, from a recognizable emergency or from serious illness. Students must provide appropriate documentation to the instructor for an absence to be considered excused. Regardless of whether an absence is excused or unexcused, students are responsible for material covered in their absence and are expected to come to subsequent class meetings fully prepared.

**All cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and kept out of sight during class.

CÓDIGO DE HONOR: Students are expected to abide by the Longwood honor code. All work done for this course must be pledged, unless otherwise indicated: “Yo, ______, juro que no he dado ni recibido ayuda en este trabajo ni he notado ninguna infracción del Código de Honor”. If you would like to abbreviate this, you may write, “Juramento,” and sign your name.
