Teaching and Learning Overview – P3M First Level

Term: Aug - Oct Learning Context: ‘The Iron Man’

We will be learning and using the modern day fairy tale of ‘The Iron Man” by Ted Hughes. This tells the story of a huge Iron Man that reaps destruction on farm machinery and equipment but when a greater force from outer space tries to create havoc on earth the Iron Man is able to help. Through this novel the children will learn many parallels about human nature.

Literacy and English: We will be exploring the characters, events and incidents in the story and using them to create and write our own stories, sharing our thoughts and ideas through drawing, speaking and listening activities and through role play.

Numeracy and Maths: We will be focussing on numbers to 100 using both addition and subtraction.

Health and Wellbeing: Through discussion and learning experiences we will develop our knowledge and understanding of the use of medicines in our lives.

In P.E we will explore movement skills, controlling our bodies and sharing space using large balls.

P.E days will be on a Monday and Wednesday.

Homework: Reading homework will be given out for two groups on a Monday and Wednesday, the remaining groups will get reading set on a Tuesday and Friday. Spelling will be given out on Monday, and practised each day to be returned by Friday of the same week. Maths homework will be given out on a Tuesday to be returned by the Friday of the same week. There may be occasional homework activities linked to our topic work. Reading bags must be brought to school everyday.

How you can support: Please encourage your child to read asking them questions about their book to deepen their understanding. Help them to count in different number patterns eg 2s, 5s, 10s. Support them with learning to tell the time including using terms quarter to and quarter past.
