- The self-reported rate of obesity has increased since 2006 from 17.5% to 25.7% in 2014 (Central Coast Community Health Survey 2014).
- Only 21.7% of the population did moderate activity (other than walking) on a daily basis and 26.2% reported they did no moderate activity at all. Vigorous activity was undertaken by only 9.6% of the Central Coast population on a daily basis, and in total 48.2% of the population did no vigorous activity at all (Central Coast Research Foundation (CCRF) (2012) Quality of Life Survey of Central Coast Residents.
NSW Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey (SPANS)2015 - Findings
- Overweight and obesity significantly increased among NSW children aged 5-16 years from low socioeconomic backgrounds (27.3% in 2010 to 33.7% in 2015)
- Estimated prevalence of overweight and obesity was significantly higher among NSW primary school children from low socioeconomic backgrounds (34.9%) compared with primary school children from high socioeconomic backgrounds (18.9%)
- Children in NSW from low and middle socioeconomic backgrounds were more likely to be in the overweight or obese BMI categories (33.7% and 23.4% respectively), compared with children from high socioeconomic backgrounds (19.3%).

Summary Guide for the Management of Overweight and Obesity in Primary Care
Key Messages
The key messages are derived from recommendations in the Obesity Guidelines and highlighted by clinical experts as the most important messages to promote for obesity management in primary care.
For adults:
- Measure waist circumference in addition to calculating BMI
- Discuss readiness to change lifestyle behaviours
- Convey the message that even small amounts of weight loss improve health and wellbeing
- Use multicomponent approaches — these work better than single interventions
- Refer appropriately to assist people to make lifestyle changes or for further intervention
- Support a self-management approach and provide ongoing monitoring
For children and adolescents:
- Use percentile charts to monitor growth
- Promote physical activity, dietary modification and healthy behaviours to families
- Encourage healthy behaviours such as drinking water and reducing screen time
- Aim for weight maintenance — this is an acceptable goal
- Know when to refer

MBS Response to caring for Overweight and Obesity:
The Hunter New England & Central Coast Primary Health Network has liaised with the Dept. of Human Services (MBS) with regard to this matter and has received the following information:
The Department has received queries about whether the following are chronic medical conditions for the purposes of the items: alcohol or other substance abuse; smoking; obesity; unspecified chronic pain; hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, or syndrome X; impaired fasting glucose tolerance or impaired glucose tolerance; pregnancy. In some cases these would not be commonly regarded as chronic medical conditions in themselves: some may more accurately be regarded as risk factors for development of chronic conditions; some possibly relate more to personal choice/behavioural issues; and some (pregnancy without complications) could be regarded as a normal part of life.
The Department recognises, however, that conditions such as these can occur across a wide spectrum of severity and in a broad range of circumstances, with, for example, some patients with one (or more) of the above conditions being unable to self-manage or comply with care and treatment, being functionally disabled by their condition etc. In many cases a patient may have complications or comorbidities that may be a result of or exacerbated by such conditions or risk factors and would make them eligible for CDM services.
In these cases, the GP should satisfy themselves that their peers would regard the provision of a CDM service as appropriate for that patient, given the patient’s needs and circumstances.
