Student Trustee Selection Criteria and Process

The government of Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is vested in a Board of eleven trustees, who are appointed by the Governor, with the advice and consent of the state senate (Ohio Revised Code § 3341.02(A)). The Board of Trustees shall include two students. According to Ohio Revised Code § 3341.02(B), the student members of the Board of Trustees of BGSU are appointed “from a group of five candidates selected pursuant to a procedure adopted by the university’s student governments and approved by the university’s board of trustees”.

The student trustees at BGSU shall serve for a two-year term, during which they are expected to represent the interests of BGSU students within the context of the university and the state of Ohio. The student trustees are also expected to remain informed on current issues and concerns of students, faculty, staff, the Bowling Green Community, and current events in higher education for Ohio. Under Ohio law, student trustees have no voting power on the Board and shall not be entitled to attend executive sessions of the Board. But, while the student trustees are nonvoting members of the Board, they will be called on regularly and expected to convey the interests of the student body to the Board in a thoughtful, assertive, and effective manner. The student trustees are will be responsible for attending all Board of Trustees meetings and representing the University at a number of conferences and events.

According to Ohio Revised Code § 3341.02(B), the two-year term of office for a student trustee at Bowling Green State University shall commence on the 17th day of May and end on the 16th day of May. In the event that a student trustee cannot complete his or her two-year term, a replacement shall be selected in the manner used for the original selection to fill the unexpired term.

This document outlines the selection criteria and process for both the undergraduate and graduate student trustee at Bowling GreenStateUniversity.

  1. QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Undergraduate Nominees
  1. Applicant must be officially enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student as constituted by Bowling GreenStateUniversity, and
  2. Applicant must be a registered voter and resident of Ohio, and
  3. Applicant must maintain an academic cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0, and
  4. Applicant must be in good standing with the University’s Office of the Bursar, and
  5. Applicant must be at least at Junior standing while serving as a Trustee, and
  6. Applicant must meet all application requirements set forth by the Undergraduate Student Board of Trustees Selection Committee, and
  7. Applicant must not be, nor have been, under any disciplinary sanction charged by the Office of the Dean of Students, Residence Life, Undergraduate Student Government, or any other official University body.
  1. Graduate Nominees
  1. Applicant must be officially enrolled as a full-time student as constituted by BGSU, and
  2. Applicant must be a registered voter and resident of Ohio, and
  3. Applicant must maintain an academic cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0, and
  4. Applicant must be in good standing with the University’s Office of the Bursar, and
  5. Applicant must meet all application requirements set forth by the Graduate Student Board of Trustees Selection Committee
  1. A graduating undergraduate student, who plans to continue at BGSU as a graduate student for a minimum of two consecutive years, and who has been actively enrolled in undergraduate classes at BGSU, is eligible to apply under the following conditions:
  1. Applicant must meet all criteria for a graduate student application, except the graduate grade-point average, and
  2. The applicant should have a proven record of leadership and involvement in the BGSU community. This record will be substantiated through a letter of recommendation from at least one advisor who has worked with the student in a leadership capacity outside of the classroom or academic assignments, and
  3. Applicant must demonstrate familiarity with graduate student issues, and
  4. Applicant must submit an original letter if acceptance from the Graduate College/program at BGSU, and
  5. Applicant must submit an official transcript from BGSU at the time of application and must have earned a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0, and
  6. Applicant must submit a letter of enrollment verification of graduate students within two weeks of the first semester of graduate to the GSS Office Secretary, and
  7. When the first academic semester of graduate work is completed, the applicant must submit an official transcript to the GSS Office Secretary stating his or her cumulative graduate grade-point average, and
  8. If the cumulative graduate grade-point average from the first graduate academic semester is below a 3.0, the student trustee must resign from the appointment.
  1. CONDITIONS OF NOMINATION

Nominees MUST meet with both the Undergraduate Student Government and Graduate Student Senate prior to each Board of Trustees meeting.

If any of the qualifications or conditions of nomination are violated, the student trustee must resign.

  1. TERM OF OFFICE
  1. According to Ohio Revised Code § 3341.02(B), the term of office of student members of the Board shall be for two years, commencing on the 17th day of May and ending on the 16th day of May.
  2. In the event that a student trustee cannot complete his or her two-year term, a replacement shall be selected in the manner used for the original selection to fill the unexpired term.
  3. Student trustees may only serve on the Board of Trustees for one (1) term. There will be no reappointments.
  1. SELECTION COMMITTEE
  1. Undergraduate Nominees

There is hereafter created a Student Board of Trustees Selection Committee for the undergraduate appointments which shall be composed of:

  1. The Vice President of the Undergraduate Student Government or his/her designee, who shall serve as chair of the selection committee, and
  2. A Representative of the USG Executive Committee, and
  3. A Representative of an Undergraduate Student Organization, as selected by the Vice President of the Undergraduate Student Government, and
  4. Three Senators selected by the Undergraduate Student Government.
  1. Graduate Nominees

There is hereafter created a Student Board of Trustees Selection Committee for the graduate appointments which shall be composed of:

  1. The Vice President of Graduate Student Senate, who shall serve as chair of the selection committee, and
  2. A Representative of Graduate Student Senate Executive Committee, and
  3. A Representative of a Graduate Student Organization as defined by the Office of Campus Activities, and
  4. Three senators to be selected by the Graduate Student Senate General Assembly

The committees are charged with the following:

  1. Assembling four (4) months prior to selection of candidates for the purpose of:
  1. Drafting an appropriate application for candidates
  2. Reviewing the student trustee selection process
  3. Observing and practicing affirmative action procedures
  1. Selecting a group of five (5) student candidates who are to be submitted to the office of the President of Bowling Green State University and forwarded to the Governor of the State of Ohio for appointment to the Board
  1. Maintaining confidentiality through the entire process

NOTE:* The Undergraduate Student Government will nominate five (5) candidates every other year. The Graduate Student Senate will nominate five (5) candidates on alternate years.

  1. SELECTION PROCEDURE

The Student Board of Trustees Selection Committees shall be chaired by the Undergraduate Student Body Vice President and the Vice President of Graduate Student Senate.

Once the committees have been assembled, they shall proceed with the following:

  1. Advertise the availability of applications for trustee nominations
  2. Review and confirm that applications meet aforementioned qualifications
  3. Select by a majority vote fifteen (15) candidates for Undergraduate Student Government and ten (10) for Graduate Student Senate
  4. Schedule interviews to narrow the field to five (5) nominees
  5. Forward five (5) nominees to the President of Bowling Green State University
  6. Notify all candidates of the results of the selection process in writing
