Litchfield Jazz Camp marks its 18th year this summer. Its five weekly sessions span July 6 to August 8. Its breaking news is a major move: the Camp will now be held at Canterbury School in New Milford, CT. The new campus allows the Camp to offer a wide array of health and fitness options along with its time-honored, top quality music instruction.
As always the faculty is star-studded, with artists including Artistic Director, saxophonist Don Braden, bassists Mario Pavone and Avery Sharpe (a 20-year member of the McCoy Tyner Trio), trombonist and first chair in the Lincoln Center Jazz orchestra, Vincent Gardiner and Peter McEachern (Head, Jazz Studies, Salisbury School), renowned trumpeter Claudio Roditi, Jean Caze (of the Michael Bublé band), and Nick Roseboro (of Mackelmore), drummers Matt Wilson, Steve Johns, Charli Persip, DownBeat Poll winners, baritone saxophonists Gary Smulyan and Claire Daly and tenor player Jimmy Greene (plays with Harry Connick, Jr.), pianists Helen Sung, Zaccai Curtis and Onaje Allen Gumbs, guitarists Dave Stryker, Doug Munro, Paul Bollenback and vocalist Nicole Zuraitis. Operations Director and 15-year veteran of the program, saxophonist Albert Rivera, is particularly excited about the expansion of the Camp’s fitness focus. Rivera, who is himself a marathon runner and fitness enthusiast, has collaborated with Litchfield Jazz Camp’s founder and executive director Vita Muir to shape the new program. The offerings include swimming classes in Canterbury’s half-Olympic sized pool, yoga classes, supervised running, group sports including soccer and basketball and more. Chats on nutrition and health will all be part of the new offerings. “I am personally very excited about the opportunities our new facility at Canterbury give us to tend to the minds and bodies of our Campers as well as their musical talents and ambitions,” says Muir.
The Litchfield Jazz Camp “has a holistic approach to education,” says Muir. Its non- competitive approach encourages all students, starting at age 12 for the first time this year and extending to adults, to explore improvisational music in small ensembles, and large ones if they desire. Instrumentalists of every type are welcome as are vocalists. Students may attend for one session or opt for more at a discount for multiple weeks. Discounts are also available for early registration and for siblings.
Fees for Litchfield Jazz Camp range from $970 for a one week day student to $5490 for a five week residential stay. Meals are included for both day and residential students.
