The Acute Services Division is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland and the investment in new hospitals and facilities in the last ten years has been considerable. A substantial volume of complex surgical work is performed in the Glasgow and Clyde units that provide a range of tertiary and national services. This allows individuals a wide range of opportunities for professional development, and Research has a high profile within the organisation. The directorate has close links with Glasgow’s three universities and makes a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and there are excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the £15 million, state of the art, Wolfson Medical School based at Glasgow University.
The successful applicant would be based at the Inverclyde Royal Hospital, which currently has 5 Consultant, general surgical posts and there are 11 at
Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley. The Consultants work across the sites covering the major sub-specialities of Upper GI, Breast and Colorectal. Each sub-specialty employs a team approach with close links to the regional Managed Clinical Networks. Fully staffed Intensive Care, High Dependency and Palliative Care beds are well utilised.
Applicant must have full GMC Registration, a license to practice and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. You should have a broad surgical training, be able to provide an elective and emergency surgical service at consultant level and have skills in endoscopy and laparoscopic surgery.
The Inverclyde area offers excellent residential accommodation and schools. There are cultural and leisure activities for all, including the award winning Beacon Arts Centre, Inverclyde Leisure operates community facilities throughout the area including its flagship leisure complex at the Waterfront and there are several good quality golf courses and clubs in the area. The Acute Services Division is split into nine Directorates across 18 sites with a workforce of 27,500 and an annual budget of £1.2 billion. The geographical area covered is diverse; it covers the major city of Glasgow, large and small towns, villages and some rural areas. We have significant challenges ahead as we deliver the objectives set out in Better Health Better Care and we seek to ensure that we have the right people for the right posts delivering a comprehensive health service to the population of Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
The Acute Services Division is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland. This allows individuals a wide range of opportunities for professional development whether in community-based care or general and specialty hospital services.
A total of £4.3 million capital funding has been invested into InverclydeRoyalHospital in the last year. Patients will have a pleasant surprise when they come to the hospital following a £1 million refurbishment of the Accident and Emergency and an investment of £200,000 on the main entrance area. These improvements include new access routes for patients and enhanced patient waiting and reception areas.
The investment in Acute Services in Glasgow in the last ten years has been considerable with two new Ambulatory Care Hospitals opened in 2009. The opening of the new Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Care Centre (2008) and the temporary centralisation of a number of specialties including Renal and Vascular onto the Western Infirmary site was undertaken in anticipation of the development of the Southern General site.
A substantial volume of complex surgical work is performed in the Glasgow and Clyde units that provide a range of tertiary and national services. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the £15 million, state of the art, WolfsonMedicalSchool based at GlasgowUniversity adjacent to the Western Infirmary site. Excellent education facilities are also provided at Glasgow Royal Infirmary with a full refurbishment of the UniversityTower completed in December 2013.
The hospitals north of the River Clyde, are Glasgow Royal Infirmary (including PrincessRoyalMaternityHospital), Western Infirmary, StobhillAmbulatoryCareHospital and Gartnavel GeneralHospital. Within Clyde sector the RoyalAlexandraHospital, InverclydeRoyalHospital and the Vale of Leven Hospital all provide acute surgical care with RAH and IRH also supporting unscheduled care.In south Glasgow the Southern General Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary alongside the new VictoriaHospital, providing ambulatory care, support the acute surgical patient.
From Glasgow, the West of Scotland’s jewels are within easy reach. Loch Lomond is just 45 minutes drive, a little further to the Argyll peninsula – or over the sea to Arran, Skye, Iona and Mull.
InverclydeRoyalHospital (IRH) Greenock
InverclydeRoyalHospital is a modern district general hospital in Greenock, and serves the Inverclyde District (Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow), Largs, Fairlie, Millport, Skelmorlie, WemyssBay, Bute and the CowalPeninsula, a total population of 160,000. The hospital has 230 beds and was opened in 1979 and provides a range of services including in-patient beds, general medical and surgical specialties, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and Accident & Emergency. A GeriatricHospital opened in February 2001 and an 8 bed Physically Disabled Rehabilitation Unit opened in Summer 2002.
The Hospital has a brand new state of the art Endoscopy Unit that was opened in June 2011 with full diagnostic and therapeutic facilities.
The Inverclyde areaoffers a range of good quality facilities. There is excellent residential accommodation available within both the town and surrounding villages. Inverclyde Council has made major investments in education over the last ten years and there are a number of newly built primary and secondary schools through out the areawhich receive excellent achievement reports. There are also good quality private schools within the town, in Kilmacolm and Glasgow. The award winning Beacon Arts Centre has been opened in the last year and offers a good program of cultural events. The Firth of Clyde is thought by many to offer the best in-shore sailing in the British Isles. There are several good quality Golf courses and clubs in the area. The town of Greenock has a modern shopping centre. Greenock, Gourock and the surrounding towns and villages have a wide range of good bars and restaurants. The Waterfront Centre offers swimming pools for both leisure and training, fitnessand gym facilities and an ice rink used for skating and curling. The newly renovated Gourock swimming pool and fitness centre offers the only out-door, heated sea water pool in Scotland.

The RoyalAlexandraHospital (RAH), Paisley:
The RAH is a 600 acute bed hospital, opened in 1986 in a 78 acre site in the town of Paisley. Located only 5 minutes from the M8 motorway and GlasgowInternationalAirport, the RAH provides an ideal centralised location.
As well as providing healthcare to the people of Renfrewshire, RAH provides major trauma and emergency surgical care for Lomond and Argyll, stretching as far as Oban.
The staff of over 2,300 provide a comprehensive range of services, including a full 24 hour A&E, HDU/ITU, a Coronary Care Unit, General Medicine, Medicine for the Elderly, Clinical Haematology, Dermatology, Neurology, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Palliative Care, Plastic Surgery, Orthodontics, Anaesthetics, Radiology and Laboratory Specialities – Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and Pathology. Oncology services are provided by visiting consultants.
Both the RAH and IRH are acute hospitals with both acute medical and surgical receiving and the full range of DGH and teaching DGH specialties and associated facilities.
Department Information and Scope of Post
This post will be based at the InverclydeRoyalHospital for acute surgical receiving and elective operating sessions. Some outpatient and diagnostic services might be carried out at other sites within Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
There are currently 5 consultant general surgical posts within the IRH and 11 at RAH. The consultants work across the sites covering the major sub-specialities of Upper GI, Breast and Colorectal.
Mr Reidy provides an on site vascular assessment and investigation service for scheduled patients at Inverclyde with close integration with the regional service in Glasgow. Each sub-specialty employs a team approach with close links to the regional Managed Clinical Networks. Fully staffed Intensive Care, High Dependency and Palliative Care beds are well utilised. Clinical Nurse Specialists are valued members of the teams.

The post is also supported by a number of Specialist Nursing Staff within Clyde providing both advanced practice in nursing and oncological care of patients.
Applications are sought from suitably trained individuals who are able to provide an elective and emergency surgical service at consultant level. It is expected that that successful candidate will have skills in endoscopy and laparoscopic surgery.
In addition to providing clinical services the successful candidate will be required to participate in the training and assessment of junior staff and to undertake the administrative duties required in a consultant job. This will include, but not be exclusive to, the maintenance of appropriate patient records, keeping and participating in personal and unit audit and the retention of documentation for appraisal. All consultants are required to have an annual appraisal.
Applicants should have a broad surgical training and should have full GMC registration and eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register. UK trainees will have evidence of Higher Specialist Training leading to CCT, or be within six months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
Indicative Clinical Duties / Job Plan:
The contract is based on 10 sessions, split 9:1 between direct clinical care 9 PAs and supporting professional activities 1 SPA, this is now the standard for all new consultant job plans within NHSGG&C. The one SPA is for activities such as appraisal, personal audit and professional development occurring outside study leave time. In time, more supporting professional activities may be agreed for roles such as undergraduate and postgraduate medical training (which takes place outside direct clinical care time), as well as research and/or management. If desired by the department, these activities would be identified specifically and agreed with the candidate up to an absolute maximum of 2.5 PA’s.

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.
