Teaching Artist Professional Development Training

Application Due by e-mail 4pm on August 1, 2016

Are you a teaching artist who believes art can and does change lives? Do you want to teach students who have dynamic creativity and expression? Would you like to connect with other teaching artists who care about engaging students with emotional and behavioral challenges?

Based on 3 years’ success by VSA Vermont Teaching Artist Lisa M. Condino in supporting student engagement through the arts at the Howard Center’s Baird School, VSA Vermont’s Arts to Smarts Project is partnering with faculty and administrators at Baird School to develop a training model for teaching artists to learn skills and gain experience to successfully engage students with severe emotional and behavioral challenges for use in both public and independent schools.

The Arts to Smarts Professional Development Pilot training will take place in the fall of 2016 and is designed to provide both information and direct experience engaging students with severe emotional and behavioral challenges through the arts. Taught by VSA Vermont Teaching Artist, Lisa M. Condino in partnership with Sandra Limoge and other faculty from Baird School, the course will begin with 3 day-long in person intensives, arts activities, assigned readings and webinars, on-line and in person reflection followed by collaborative planning sessions and a practicum at Baird School (Howard Center) in Burlington. The course will wrap up with a final in-person meeting.

To be considered for participation, applicants must be available to attend the 4 class dates listed below, complete readings and on-line reflections, participate in on-line meetings, complete a practicum at Baird School (Howard Center) in Burlington, and successfully complete background checks.

Teaching artists who are accepted for the pilot course will each receive a $700 stipend. Teaching artists can choose to use part of their stipend for tuition and receive 3 graduate level credits from St. Michael’s College, contingent upon successful completion of the pilot training course.
