Adult literacy programs targeted

The State Department of Education is soliciting requests to help provide adult education and literacy services in Oklahoma and Canadian counties. At least two applicants will receive federal funds for adult learner services, according to the department. The deadline is June 27, and the state department can provide more information at 521-3321. Eligible applicants include but are not limited to:

▪  Local educational agencies, including public school districts.

▪  Community-based organizations.

▪  Volunteer literacy organizations.

▪  Institutions of higher education.

▪  Public or private nonprofit agencies.

▪  Libraries.

▪  Public housing authorities.

Scholarships go to OSU

▪  The Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology received $10,000 in scholarship funds from the Public Service Company of Oklahoma. The donation was made to support the institute’s degree program in the applied sciences of power plant technology, which started in September in response to a declining workforce at utility companies, according to the university.

▪  Separately, Oklahoma State University graduate student Adelheid West received a $2,500 Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship from Annie’s Homegrown. West is pursuing a master’s degree in plant and soil science. Annie’s Homegrown is a leading natural and organic food company based in California.

School foundation programs ‘outstanding’

Four programs will receive the Outstanding Program Awards for Local Education Foundations. The awards are sponsored by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence and will be presented in October, along with a $1,000 reward each. The four programs are:

▪  Excellence in Education Program, Cheyenne.

▪  Cultural Enrichment Grant Program, Okmulgee.

▪  Challenge Day, Putnam City.

▪  The Breakfast and Brown Bag Book Club, Stillwater.
