Today’s readings refer to the only sin that cannot be forgiven, which is the result of a hardened heart. What is the unforgivable sin--, that God cannot forgive?

The prophet Jeremiah, spoke on behalf of God, who said, “Listen to my voice: then I shall be your God and you shall be my people. But they obeyed not, nor did they pay heed. Rather they walked in the hardness of their evil hearts, and turned their backs not their faces from me.”

These words symbolically represent, those who approached Jesus, and said, “By the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons, He drives out demons.” They walked in the hardness of their evil hearts, and had turned their backs on God. They therefore, attributed a holy and compassionate act of God, of driving out demons, to that of the devil. Only one with a hardened heart, could not see the loving finger of God, who freed the person from the bondage of Satan. If one is so blinded, that they attribute holy and righteous actions of God, to that of the devil, they suffer from heart that is so hardened, the person’s sins cannot be forgiven. Therefore, a hardened heart is a heart, which does not seek forgiveness.

The only unforgivable sin-- is the sin against the Holy Spirit, which is the sin one fails to repent of. It is the sin, which accuses the Holy Spirit of doing something that is evil. The person fails to acknowledge their sorrow for the sin, because they are so blinded to their sin, that they fail to even acknowledge, it as a sin. The sin, therefore that God cannot forgive, is the sin, in which the person will not ask for forgiveness.

The responsorial psalm states, “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts”. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, pray and intercede for those, whose hearts are hardened, that their hearts may be softened, that they may hear His voice, and so return to the Lord, bow down and worship the Lord, who made them, for He is our God, and they are the people, He shepherds!
