ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES IRVINGTONHIGH SCHOOL
Department: Physical Education
Course: Physical Education, Grade 10
Teacher: Strout
Physical Education is unique because in order to reach both physical and mental wellness, a student must participate in various physical activities on a regular basis. These activities will incorporate the development of the cardiovascular system, the muscular system and interpretive (i.e. Critical thinking) skills. Along with these skills, Communication, Social and Personal responsibility will be emphasized through sportsmanship, teamwork, and discipline.
In order to achieve these outcomes, a person must dress in proper gym clothes and participate in all aspects of class activities approximately 85% of the time. This would also mean the student, in order to demonstrate an understanding of cardiovascular, organic, interpretive, and social development, cannot have a combination of 5 unexcused non-dresses, unsatisfactory performances, or unexcused absences in any quarter. Students will have to comply with all safety and health rules applicable to the class (i.e. gym clothes) and demonstrate a satisfactory effort and knowledge in daily cardiovascular, physical fitness, and each unit activity. If all of the above outcomes are not met, the student will not earn credit for that quarter and/or semester and a NC (no credit) may be given. Students and parents will be given a choice at the start of the semester whether they want a Pass/No Credit grading system or the current A, B, C, No Credit grading system now in place.
Specific unit outcomes in the following activities:
Volleyball SoftballIndoor Soccer GolfLacrosseOthers
Team Handball BasketballFleetball SpeedballFootball Whiffle Ball
A student will be able to demonstrate, through satisfactory participation, a fundamental understanding of the activity and knowledge of the rules of the game.
Due to the nature of Physical Education, our course is set up on a variable unit system. Because our outcomes stress teamwork, personal responsibility, and discipline, it is important for a student to dress and participate satisfactorily everyday. The variable unit system is set up so the student earns 1 point each day they satisfactorily participate. A student starts out the quarter with 0 units. Every 8 days/points of satisfactory participation will earn a student .5 units of credit, up to 2.5 units per quarter. Therefore it is important for a student to use tutorials, if possible, for the purpose of gaining a point or points that may not have been earned throughout a quarter for that quarter. Each quarter’s grade will be averaged and quarter units if passing, will be totaled to award a semester grade and units. If a student does not earn the maximum of 2.5 units in any quarter, they may attend Make-up Physical Education during “0” period.
Physical Education Grading System
The Physical Education grading system let’s the students and parents have a choice between getting a Pass/N.C. grade or receiving a regular A thru C or N.C. grade. Students and their parents will make this decision on this Physical Education outcome sheet you now have in your possession. The Pass/N.C. grade will not affect a students grade point average, they will just be awarded the credits earned. Please pick one system and acknowledge that you have read the Physical Education outcomes by signing this form and returning it immediately.
