Powder Springs Elementary School

Dear Parents:

As I walk through the quiet halls of Powder Springs Elementary, I am reflecting on this past school year. I am overwhelmed by the support that I have received from parents and our staff this year, as a first year principal. I am also pleased with the academic progress that our students made this year. I am looking forward to quality time this summer to plan for the 2013-2014 school year and all of the wonderful things that it will bring.

With that being said, I want to make sure that everyone is aware of a change that will be occurring when we return to school in August. Based on the results of our dress code survey (see data below), Powder Springs Elementary will implement uniforms for our K-5 students.

Uniforms are becoming more widespread among schools in our district, particularly in middle and elementary schools. There are numerous researched-based reasons supporting uniforms such as improving school safety, instilling school pride, and ensuring equality. We believe that school uniforms will impart a sense of belonging and help our students feel part of the school community. We are hopeful that uniforms will also help to create an attitude of “work mode” for our students, encouraging them to take school seriously.

As you begin to purchase “back to school” clothing for the fall, families may select navy blue, white or light blue collared polo shirts. Bottoms (pants, capris, skirts, skorts, shorts, jumpers) may be khaki or navy blue, but not denim. Tennis shoes may be worn, as well as black or brown closed-toe shoes. Uniforms can be purchased at many department stores including Old Navy, Wal-Mart, Target, JC Penney, etc.

We certainly appreciate your input in our survey and we are looking forward to seeing our students in the fall. Have a safe, wonderful summer!
