BRIEF OUTLINE OF ACTIVITIES

A walk through a mainly dry mangrove area:
-  locating
-  identifying
-  studying
-  discussing a wide rang of animal life. / 1½ hrs / 5 – 6 / Centre Staff / ·  Some pre-visit knowledge is beneficial.
·  Students do not get too muddy (only shoes).
·  Some samples may be collected and brought back to centre for closer inspection.
·  Take into consideration time of day, time of year eg. heat, sandflies, mozzies etc.)

·  How mangroves have adapted
·  Different species
·  Special characteristics
·  Importance of mangroves.

Experiencing mangrove mud first hand.
Brief discussion on plants and animals and importance of mangroves.

·  Low tide is essential (check tide book.)
·  Be prepared for students to get very muddy!
·  Usually a wash in the ocean (non stinger season) then use outside showers to clean themselves.

·  Parents and Teachers to understand students are to solve the problems themselves with no outside help.

·  Must be an extra 2 adults on site
·  Need own transport to the Rock
·  Cost per student is $7.00 pre GST

Students given a map and learn how to interpret it.. Students given time to work out strategy to find as many markers in a set period of time. / 1 hr / 6 / Centre Teacher
