Be Here and Be Happy, or Haul Wood

It is a great day to be your Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer.

Someone asked me this morning if it was hard coming to work, instead of staying home with Don, “the old retired one”?

I answered, “No, that it is a pleasure to come to work with people like all of you”. I can think of nothing better. Working here at the College of Southern Idaho, doing what I like to do, with the people I enjoy sharing time.

In his State of the College address, President Beck spoke of national, state and local issues that may affect us in the upcoming year. I would like to review several accomplishments from the past year.

Some things are personal that have changed our lives. We have lost loved ones. For that I am sorry. Some of us have married. For that I celebrate you!!! Some of us have added children and grandchildren to our families, what a wonderful thing!!!!

Here at CSI, I would like to share some accomplishments:

  • We have implemented a new online portal called MyCSI, which allows students, faculty, staff and the community access to information 24 hours a day.
  • Trade and Industry (T&I) had four Gold medalists at the state skills competition this year. A Cabinetmaking student brought home the Bronze medal for 5th place in the nation during summer competition.
  • The Forensics team placed 5th in the nation during spring semester competition.
  • Summer school enrollment was substantially increased over last year.
  • The Enrollment Management committee recommendations are to the president and the administrative council. Many activities have occurred to address increased enrollment for fall semester.
  • A number of staff and faculty have received advanced college degrees
  • Matrix personnel have used Camera Phones for advising, and now all department chairs have the technology. Students from our off campus center can speak with and see the person on the other end of the phone.
  • Off campus tours were done twice this summer. What a great success!!! Thank you to PACE and Elaine, Jennifer, and Annette and their staff.
  • New educational programs have evolved; Manufacturing Technology, Animal Science, Residential Construction.
  • More new educational programs are on the horizon. These programs are based on community input and student needs. We are exploring a program in Dance, Mass Communication, Health Information Technology, and possibly Medical Lab Technology and Dental Hygiene.
  • We have partnered with the universities to bring an Animal Science/Dairy lab to the MagicValley and with BSU to bring a Social Work program to campus. The BSW and MSW will being in fall 2008

What do we have to look forward to?? A good semester, with lots of students and very happy and healthy faculty and staff, this is my answer. What is your answer to this question?

Yes, I would rather be here on the campus of the College of Southern Idaho, after all the “old retired one” is busy hauling firewood for heating our house this coming winter., and he has restacked the existing pile three times.

Yes, this is a great place to work. Together we can make CSI an even better place to work. It is our personal choice: Be here, be happy, or haul firewood.

What would you rather being doing??

After receiving my B.S., I continued on and studied for a Master’s in Nutritional Science, with an emphasis in International Nutrition, which I earned in April of 2006. While I was a Master’s student, I worked at a Small Animal and Exotics hospital (dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, snakes, etc…) in Salt Lake City. After I graduated, I moved to Blacksburg, Virginia to work at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Virginia Tech.
