Prior to examination the DMA in musical composition is required complete;
Part One
i. Present a lecture-seminar
ii. Arrange a public performance of their work
Part Two
i. Present another lecture-seminar
ii. Arrange a second public performance of their work
iii. Arrange a third public performance of their work (Part Three)
The Doctoral examination consists of three components below;
i. Present a public lecture-seminar
ii. Submit a portfolio of compositions
iii. Submit a thesis

The two examiners must both be external to the University of Canterbury and neither should be a close working colleague or friend of any member of the student’s supervisory team. As oral examiner must attend the public performance they will normally be from New Zealand or East Coast Australia.

The oral examination organiser will be a senior member of the University staff who has not been involved in the student’s thesis work.

· The Public lecture-seminar must be attended by the Oral examiner and occur prior to the Oral exam.
· The Oral examiner and the student must agree to public lecture and all parties to the Oral date.
· Examiners are normally asked to complete their reports 10 weeks after receipt of the portfolio of compositions and thesis.
