Music Exploratory

Course Overview:

Each student will realize that they can be a ukulele player. This course serves as an introduction to the instrument and instant access to making music on the ukulele.

Students will explore strumming and rhythms, reading music, improvising and beginning songwriting.

Students will explore using the Garage Band app on iPads for rhythm exercises and recording multiple tracks of music.

Course Description:

  • Students will be able to identify the parts of the ukulele and their uses.
  • Students will develop finger dexterity and strumming abilities.
  • Students will perform exercises such as playing scales, chord charts, strumming patterns and rhythms, they will practice independently and in groups.
  • Student will be able to read basic music for the ukulele.
  • Students will play simple solo songs and duets while staying on beat.
  • Students will play popular songs using chord charts
  • Students will learn finger picking and basic improvisation
  • Students will learn to transpose

Class supplies:

  • Notebook or folder with pockets. Students will receive many handouts and will need to organize and store them.
  • Pencil
  • Ukulele pic (optional)
  • Ukulele (provided)

Grading

Students will be asked to play by themselves and with partners for the teacher to assess how student is progressing. Playing quizzes are based on techniques learned in class. Students play for teacher when they are ready and within a given time limit.

The final is a cumulative chord review and a group performance project at the end of the term. Time will be given in class for practice.

Classroom Behavior:

Students are expected to be safe, responsible and respectful at all times.

Classroom behavior and Due Process is outlined on page 24 and 25 of the Jagenda.

Food is not allowed in class.

Cell phone/camera phones policy outlined on page 16 of the Jagenda is enforced.

Students will be allowed to use cell phone for educational purposes.

Citizenship:

Outstanding (O)-The student consistently exceeds expectations and exhibits behavior that enhances the learning environment. This includes but is not limited to: helping others, meaningful clas participation, on time, prepared everyday with materials, attentive, respectful to teacher and other students.

Satisfactory (S)- The student consistently exhibits behavior that contributes to a safe and successful learning environment. This includes but is not limited to: class participation, on time, prepared with materials, respectful to others, works well in a group.

Needs Improvement (N)-The student sometimes exhibits behavior that is not conducive to a safe and successful learning environment and continues to do so after verbal coaching. This includes but is not limited to frequently tardy, unprepared with materials, off-task behavior, disruptive behavior and disrespectful to teacher and other students in the class.

Unsatisfactory (U)- The student often exhibits behavior that is not conducive to a safe and successful learning environment. Disrespectful of teacher and other students.
