Emergency Action Plan
WYBA at Warren Middle School
WYBA events at Warren Middle School have a written emergency plan that should be followed in the event of a medical emergency. All coaches should be familiar with this document and their role and responsibility in an emergency. Any questions should be directed to the WYBA Safety Coordinator or the WYBA Secretary.
An emergency is the need for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to give further medical attention and/or transport an athlete to the hospital. It is important in these situations that coordination be effective. This guide is intended to outline the protocol should an emergency occur.
Situations when 911 should be called are:
- An athlete is not breathing
- An athlete has lost consciousness
- It is suspected that an athlete may have a neck or back injury
- An athlete has an open fracture (Bone has punctured through the skin)
- Severe heat exhaustion or suspected heat stroke
- Severe bleeding that cannot be stopped

Other Adults* (see exceptions below)
Other Athletes
The highest person in the chain of command who is present at the scene will be the designated person in charge. That person is responsible for deciding whether or not to call 911, instructing others how they may be of help and will be the person who stays with the athlete until EMS arrives. (Exceptions: if a parent/guardian of the athlete insists that 911 be called then 911 should be called or a medical professional is present and the parent/guardian or coach decides to yield responsibility to that individual).
Once it has been decided that 911 should be called the following protocol should be followed:
- The highest person on the chain of command or surrogate as described above will be deemed the leader and will stay with the athlete to monitor the athlete’s condition and administer necessary first aid. If possible, someone else on the chain of command should stay and assist.
- Someone with a cell phone should call 911. EMS should be told what the emergency is, the condition of the athlete, and how to get to where the athlete is. DO NOT HANG UP UNTIL EMS HANGS UP FIRST.
- If possible runners should be sent out to help direct EMS to the injured athlete.
- If parent/guardian is not present, parent guardian should be contacted. (Coaches should have emergency contacts for each player with them at all WYBA events).
- If transport is deemed necessary by EMS, the athlete will be taken to the closest appropriate hospital unless the parent/guardian requests otherwise.
Warren Middle School is located at 100 Old Stirling Road, Warren, NJ
The closest intersection is Reinman Road and Old Stirling Road.
(The school is about 0.2 mile south of the intersection on Old Stirling Rd.).
Location of AED
The AED is located as follows:
Exit door to front gym. Turn left. AED is on the left wall down the hallway across from the nurse’s office.
Coaches should take note of the AED location closest to their practice and game locations.
Concussion Protocol
Any player that receives contact to the head or body that results in severe head movements must be immediately removed from the game and not allowed to return to play. This can be determined by a coach or referee. This cannot be over ruled by either the player or a parent/guardian.
Any player removed from a WYBA event due to a potential concussion event may not resume participation in any WYBA activity without a return to play document signed by a doctor orwaiver signed by a parent/guardian. If the player is diagnosed with a concussion, a doctor signed returned to play document is required.
