A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR MRS. MAMIE J. REARDEN, OF EDGEFIELD COUNTY, A MUCHLOVED MATRIARCH OF SPRINGFIELD BAPTIST CHURCH AT NEARLY ONE HUNDRED TEN YEARS OF AGE, AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, Mamie J. Rearden was born Mamie Julia Lewis on September 7, 1898, just before the dawn of the twentieth century, and as that century and the beginnings of the twentyfirst century have brought incredible changes and developments to this nation, Mrs. Rearden has been there to witness all of them; and

Whereas, the young Mamie received her early education at Log Creek Community School in Edgefield County and continued her education at Bettis Academy, where she earned a teaching certificate. In 1918, she began her first teaching job at a rural community school called Faulkner Mountain; and

Whereas, in 1919, she wed Oacy Rearden, the new Mrs. Rearden continuing her teaching career for several more years, after which time she and her husband decided it was more important for her to stay at home and raise their young ones. In a union that lasted fiftynine years until Oacy’s passing, the couple parented eleven children, among whom were teachers, a beautician, and a lawyer; and

Whereas, at age sixtyfive, when most people are ready to retire, Mrs. Rearden obtained her first driver’s license and began doing volunteer work. At the age of seventy, she went back into the work force as a case worker with the Office of Economic Opportunity, a position that required her to drive over the entire county to check on underprivileged clients; and

Whereas, a woman of faith, Mamie Rearden is a past president of the Simmon Ridge Samaritan Baptist Women’s Auxiliary, a mother of Springfield Baptist Church, and a senior choir member; and

Whereas, in honor of Mrs. Rearden’s many years of service to her church, her friends and family members will host a celebratory gathering, a special recognition service, on Saturday, May 3, 2008; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is proud to join with Mrs. Rearden’s family and friends in honoring this truly lovely lady. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Mrs. Mamie J. Rearden, of Edgefield County, a muchloved matriarch of Springfield Baptist Church at nearly one hundred ten years of age, and wish her continued health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Rearden.
