About the Topic
Reinhold Industries, Inc. is a diversified manufacturer of advanced custom composite components and sheet molding compounds for a variety of applications in the United States and Europe. Reinhold derives revenues from the defense, aerospace and other commercial industries. Reinhold has been producing high-quality ablative (heat resistant) composite components for the rocket-propulsion industry for over four decades. Reinhold is also recognized as a leader in the compression molding business with the largest press capacity on the West Coast. Reinhold is currently organized in three operating segments:
• AEROSPACE
• SEATING PRODUCTS
• COMMERCIAL
Reinhold Engineered Plastics, the forerunner to today's Reinhold Industries, Inc., was founded in 1928. The purpose of the business was the molding of components from Bakelite, the first commercially available polymer molding material. In the 1940’s and 1950’s, Reinhold pioneered some of the earliest fiberglass plastic components for the aircraft industry such as radomes and antenna covers as well as entered the newly created field of ablative composites. Ablative composites are fiber reinforced polymer structures, which absorb, as they char, the destructive thermal energy generated by burning rocket propellants or hypersonic re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. This field became Reinhold's core business for decades to come. Today, Reinhold has leading market positions in several niche industries, including the #1 position in composite commercial aircraft seatbacks, ablative composite components for tactical missiles, and protective helmets in Europe.
Initially developed for the military aerospace market, high-performance composites offer performance superior to that of conventional structural metals and are currently used in a variety of diverse applications, including transportation, sporting goods, communications satellites, infrastructure, heavy industry and in the energy sector.

About the Speaker
Joe Savage - Director of Sales & Technical Support, Aircraft Seating Structures, Reinhold Industries.
Joe Savage is a Reinhold veteran of more than twenty years and has managed the Reinhold Aircraft Seating Structures Business Unit, whose primary product is aircraft seatbacks, since November, 1998. Joe believes that the passage of controlling interest in Reinhold to private investors in 1999 was a liberating event, initiating an aggressive policy of growth that was the natural tendency of management. This policy complements Reinhold people, the company's greatest strength. "Their capability is unmatched, their experience, expertise, and process innovation make us the industry leader in technology and cost controls," says Joe. As the world leader, this team strives for a more robust manufacturing process and to distinguish composites from the standard metal seatback. The estimated worldwide market for new and retrofit seatbacks is 300,000 for the year 2000. Of that, 65% is projected as metal. Our goal is to increase the market share for composites, and the product is here. The Reinhold USA and UK teams have collaborated to develop a new, hybrid seatback that is lighter, stronger, more comfortable, more pleasing in shape and design, and can accommodate more features - all at a price that is equal to or better than metal seatbacks. With pressure mapping and other sophisticated testing methods, the benefits of composites can be convincingly demonstrated. Our goal for this year is to work in concert with our customers to assure that those benefits are made compellingly clear to specification writers and airline companies.
