Battle of New Orleans Quilt Activity

Directions: Students will use the information they have learned in class about the Battle of New Orleans to make a 9-square quilt. Total size of paper quilt will be no more than 30 x 30 inches MAXIMUM. Students must work in PENCIL COLORS and BLACK INK.

Materials:

Construction Paper Rulers

White paper Scissors

Color pencils Tape

Instructions:

Follow the instructions below.

Square Topics

1.  Map of Louisiana delta (Chalmette/ New Orleans/ Mississippi River) area (must be colored). This will be the Center Square of the quilt.

2.  Map of country doing the attacking (include some brief background information and some pictures that would represent them) Top Left Square

3.  Map of country being attacked (include some brief background information and some pictures that would represent them) Top Right Square

4.  President of USA at the time and some brief information about him. Middle Left Side

5.  Name and art of the leader of American troops (Brief Bio.) Middle Right Side

6.  Name and art of the leader of British troops (Brief Bio.) Bottom Left

7.  Name and art of the leader of the Baratarians (Brief Bio.) Bottom Right

8.  Date of the Battle of New Orleans Top Middle

9.  Picture and brief information of the battle Bottom Middle

10.  Put your name AND class period on back.

***When putting together the quilt, make sure you put the quilt squares in the correct places. I will take off points for not following directions.

III. Each Student needs to use one sheet of white paper for topic information.

They need to keep all information brief

Must use rulers when needed

Make sure that all your writing parts are level and not all over the place.

All information must be hand-written in BLACK INK.

Use PENCIL COLORS to attract interest

Cut various colors of construction paper into no more than 10 x 10 inch squares

Use pictures when possible (you may use the internet, magazines, books, and etc.)

Hand-write in large enough letters to make it easy to read

Keep it simple and NEATNESS counts

IV. When finished students need to glue each page to a sheet of construction paper.

(Make sure each topic is on a different color construction paper or use two colors in a checker board design.)

V. Lay out the pages and tape the back edges where each sheet meets to be put

together the quilt. Tape all 9 pages together to form a quilt. Make sure not to tie them together too tightly so you can fold the quilt when finished.
