Tamworth Golf Courseto reopen

The future of Tamworth Golf Course has been secured in the short term, after Tamworth Borough Council’s Cabinet voted to reopen the course under council management for an interim period of two years.

Members took the decision at Tuesday night’s Cabinet meeting, after considering three options. These were:

  • The closure of the golf course and consideration of the longer-term sustainability options for the site
  • Re-opening the golf course, run by Tamworth Borough Council, for an interim period.
  • The appointment of an interim management company to operate the golf course for a period of 12 months.

The course is now set to reopen to members and the public on Saturday, subject to the weather conditions.

Members backed the option to reopen the course under the council’s management for a period of two years. Work will now begin to look at other options for securing the long-term future of the golf course site, including future redevelopment and investment options.

The Council also remains committed to the development of a driving range as part of the longer-term options for the future.

The course is owned by Tamworth Borough Council and had been leased to Tamworth Golf Centre Ltd since 2006.The course closed last month after the company which ran it, Tamworth Golf Centre Ltd, went into liquidation.

Anthony Goodwin, Tamworth Borough Council Chief Executive, said: “The decision to reopen and operate Tamworth Golf Course for an interim period was not automatic. The Council has faced significant budget cuts over the last few years and must consider carefully where to spend taxpayers’ money.

“We now have an opportunity to work with Tamworth Golf Club to review the costs and benefits of operating the golf course and to carefully consider the longer-term options.

“The Council has listened to the feedback from golfers and members of the public and now urges supporters of the course to show their support directly by making use of the facility.

“We want to make it clear from the outset that the decision to reopen and run the course under Council management is an interim measure, and in order to make the best use of public funds, to minimise the cost to the taxpayers of the borough and to protect frontline services, we will be looking at longer-term options for the future of the golf course.”
