Choosing Preferences

In regard to selecting and ordering preferences:

·  Year 12 applicants can apply for courses starting in semester 1,

2015 on one QTAC application.

·  Up to six course preferences can be listed. It is recommended that ideal, realistic and ‘foot-in-the-door’ courses are included.

·  When ordering preferences, you must consider the major offer round date for each preference. (Major offer round dates are listed against each course in the QTAC Guide and on the QTAC website). At the time of any major offer round you must ensure the courses in that major offer round are listed higher than courses offered in a subsequent offer round.

·  When an offer is made in one round, applicants have the option of changing their preferences and responding to their offer on a ‘conditional basis’. Giving a conditional response is essential if the applicant wishes to be considered for higher preferences (new or existing) in a subsequent offer round.

·  As some performing arts courses are offered in December they must be ordered differently. If the course you are applying for has a footnote ‘December is the major offer round for this course’ you must list it above courses which are offered in January.

For further information about ordering preferences, see the QTAC Guide, page 56, or the Ordering Preferences movie on the QTAC website or make an appointment to see Mr McDonald or Mrs Semple in the Wellbeing Centre.

Ordering Preferences

It is essential that preferences are ordered carefully as offers are made to eligible applicants in order of the major offer round date.

With this in mind, you should order your preferences using the following plan…

Preferences
/ Ideal
Courses / These are the courses you would really like to study even though your chances of gaining entry may not be assured.
Preferences / Realistic
Courses / These courses are less competitive. Realistically, they should provide another way to the career you want or to a second-choice career. They can be used to upgrade to your ‘ideal’ course.
Preferences
/ ‘Foot-in-the-Door’
Courses / These courses are the ones you are prepared to do if you miss out on all the others. They should be courses that in the past have been quite easy to get into (especially the 6th preference). They can help you upgrade.

Acceptance

It is important that you respond to an offer by QTAC; do not assume that they will hold the place for you because they offered you a place. If you do not respond to your offer you will lose that offer and your account will become inactive therefore none of your other preferences will be considered. If you are unsure of accepting the offer then one option you have is to conditionally accept and ask to be considered for a higher preference.

Scholarships

Each University offers a number of Scholarships in a range of areas, students will need to log onto the various University WebPages for details on scholarship offerings, for example:

·  Queensland University of Technology

http://www.qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships/scholarships-and-prizes

·  The University of Queensland

·  Griffith University

·  Australian Catholic University
http://www.acu.edu.au/study_at_acu/courses/scholarships_and_financial_support

·  University of the Sunshine Coast

Deferment

Each University has Deferment rules, if you are considering deferment it is wise to contact the Admissions department of the University that you would like to attend to find out if deferment is an option. Refer to page 60 of the QTAC Guide for more information.

NOTE: Deferring course to 2016 may incur higher university fees.

OP Ineligible Students

OP ineligible students who have lodged a QTAC application can find out their OP ineligible selection rank by accessing QTAC's Current Applicant online service from 30 December 2014. This service will enable applicants to view and print a record of the QTAC selection rank allocated to their Year 12 qualification. Please note this service will not record selection ranks allocated to any additional qualifications submitted as part of their QTAC application such as traineeships or AMEB music qualifications.

OP ineligible students who do not lodge a QTAC application can find out their OP ineligible selection rank by calling QTAC Information Services on
1300 467 822.
