SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Stafford County is located in northeastern Virginia, 40 miles south of Washington, DC and 60 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. Stafford was previously rural in nature, but growth in the last 25 years has shifted. The county is rapidly becoming suburban. In fact, Stafford is one of the fastest-growing counties in the Commonwealth.

Brooke Point High School opened in 1993 and now has an approximate enrollment of 1825. It is a comprehensive high school attended by students in grades 9 through 12, with a professional staff of 123. The academic and career/technical programs at Brooke Point are geared to a wide range of occupational and professional opportunities. Career and technical classes are taught at this high school and also at Colonial Forge, Mountain View, North Stafford, and Stafford High Schools, to which groups are transported. Students may earn a Standard or Advanced Studies Diploma.

SCHOOL ORGANIZATION

The curriculum at Brooke Point High School is administered on a hybrid day schedule

which offers students four 90-minute classes, either every day or every other day. Credits are awarded for successful completion of classes at the end of the school year. Beginning with the 2010 – 2011 school year, Brooke Point High School is recognized as an International Baccalaureate World School.

CURRICULUM

Academic Rigor and Course Selection

Students are encouraged to select rigorous courses that will provide an intellectual challenge

and will better prepare them for future educational and career pursuits beyond high school.

Students are guided with course selection, each year, to ensure both graduation and career-

based requirements are met.

High School Courses Taken in Middle School

If a middle school student successfully completes a high school credit course, the credit earned

is used to satisfy both credit and course requirements for graduation. The grades earned are

included when calculating the student’s grade point average. Within 60 days following the

completion of the high school course, taken at the middle school level, each parent/guardian

has the opportunity to request that the credit and grade be removed from the permanent record.

Advanced Placement Program

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program provides students with the opportunity to pursue

college-level studies while still in high school. Upon successful completion of the courses,

students will receive high school credit. Additionally, they may receive college credit when

entering college. Students may take these courses through our high school or through the

Virtual Advanced Placement School. AP courses listed below are offered based on enrollment. Grades earned carry weighted credit in the GPA calculation:

•AP US History •AP US Government •AP US/Comp Government

•AP World History •AP Calculus AB •AP Statistics

•AP English Literature/Composition •AP English Language/Composition

•AP Computer Science •AP Computer Science Principles

Additional AP courses are available with CGS and online through the Virtual Virginia

Program.

The International Baccalaureate Program

All International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools are schools that share a common

philosophy - a commitment to a high-quality, challenging, inquiry-based curriculum with a focus on international-mindedness and development of the whole person. IB is recognized by institutions around the world for its rigorous preparation of students as critical thinkers, global citizens, and lifelong learners.

Students have the opportunity to pursue the full IB Diploma which includes a specific outline of course curriculum for the eleventh and twelfth grade. Students who wish to enroll in specific IB areas of study will receive an IB certificate for the successful completion of that course. IB courses currently offered at BPHS are:
