By Car

(Driving Time from - London 4-4.5 hours; Heathrow Airport (LHR) 3.5-4 hours; Gatwick Airport(LGW) 4.5 hours; Bristol 2 hours)

From London including LHR (allow 4 hours);

West on M4 – continue for 100 miles beyond Heathrowto M4/M5 interchange at Bristol

South on M5 – continue for 80 miles to end (at Exeter)

Continue South on A38 (NOT A30) towards Plymouth for18 miles,then exit left ontoA384

TakeA384 towards, Totnes, Dartington, Dartmouth – continue for 4 miles, then turn left for Dartington at church on left, small lane, small signpost. (If missed, will arrive in Totnes after another 1-2 miles).

From LGW (allow 4.5 hours):

Take M23 North towards London; after 9 miles

Take M25 West (Clockwise) then either:

Turn left at M25/M4 interchange near LHR (after 30 miles on M25)and follow above...

Or (shorter by 20 miles, but much less Mway and probably same journey time)

After 23 miles on M25 Take M3 West , then after 31 miles on M3

Take A303 West for 96 miles until meeting up with the M5 by Exeter

Take M5 south and continue as above.

By Train

From London,there areregular direct trains (no changes) from London Paddington to Totnes

FromLHR, either:

  1. Take Heathrow Express train from airport to Paddington, then connectto mainline train to Totnes,

or

  1. Take Railair Bus from airport nonstop to Reading railway station and connect with trains from Paddington

From LGW, either:

1.Take Gatwick Express from airport to LondonVICTORIA;

2. Take underground or taxi to PADDINGTON station

3. Take direct train to Totnes

Or

1. Take Train form Airport direct to Reading Station;

2. Connect to trains from Paddington (which all stop at Reading)

Fares

The appropriate fare for any of the London-Totnes trains shown here is an ‘Off-peak’(OP) return which is £67 (standard class) and can be purchased on the web, or at the station on the day of travel). Full fare (‘Flexible’ ) - which is necessary for early morning weekday trains to/from London - is a lot more expensive.

There are also cheaper ‘Advance’ tickets which are in limited supply, must be booked in advance (see web link: fgw.co.uk) and are only valid on the specific train for which they are purchased. The saving on the London-Totnes route is not great when compared with the OP fare and the loss of flexibility on which train is taken can be a problem for anyone travelling to London from elsewhere, and running the risk of missing the intended Devon train.
