NR: information not recorded.

Age category:

1: age ≤ 2 years

2: age between 2-3 years (including 3 years)

3: age between 3-4 years (including 4 years)

4: age between 4-5 years

BF vs. FF:

BF: Breastfeeding

FF: Formulafeeding

The months between BF cessation and baseline sampling are recorded in parenthesis.

Synbiotic:

Y: The samples taken from the synbiotic treatment group in the end of intervention

N: The samples at baseline, samples from the placebo group of intervention and 2 and 8 months after the intervention.

Antibiotics:

Y: Sample wastaken after short-term antibiotics treatment for acute infections. Each antibiotic course length was as recommended for the type of antibiotic, meaning that e.g. amoxicillin is usually 10 days etc. The weeks between antibiotics and sampling are recorded in parenthesis.

N:The samples were taken from the children without antibiotics treatment during the preceedingperiod.

Richness is represented by responding oligos

Evenness is quantified by Pielou's index

Stability is assessed by Pearson correlation between consecutive time points
