About the work area

UWA Sport forms part of the Division of Student Life, which is managed under the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education) portfolio. Sport and Recreation is an important part of campus life and the student experience at The University of Western Australia. UWA Sport aims to enhance the reputation of the University through the performance of sporting clubs, teams, and high profile athletes, whilst also providing an outstanding student experience through participation in Sport, Fitness and Recreational activities.

UWA Sport provides professional management of the fitness, sports and recreation facilities, clubs, programmes and activities of the University. UWA Sport works closely with all stakeholders and external strategic partners in delivering sport and physical recreation opportunities for the University community in accordance with strategic and operational plans. This includes managing the fully equipped Recreation and Fitness Centre; the courts and playing fields on the Crawley Campus; the 33 hectares of sporting facilities and playing fields at UWA Sports Park; and the martial arts centre at Claremont Campus. In addition, UWA Sport operates the Water sports Complex situated on the Swan River providing world class outdoor activities.

Role Statement

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

·  To provide high quality service and deliver quality health and fitness experiences for all members, with a specific focus on maximising student membership, participation and engagement, and overall member retention. The Fitness and Health Manager is responsible for managing the day to day operations of the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre including sporting grounds and facilities on the Crawley Campus.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

·  To execute and deliver outcomes as outlined in the Operational Priority Plan and Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the University of Western Australia and UWA Sport.

·  To oversee management of the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre, including all bookings, usage, staffing, maintenance, cleaning and security.

·  To promote a positive healthy lifestyle and personal wellbeing by providing quality training facilities, equipment, programs and services, utilising and developing professional, educated and suitably trained staff (with focus on UWA Students).

·  To successfully increase and maintain the customer service delivery and provide high quality programs, facilities and services in line with UWA Sport business plan.

·  To develop and maintain strategic relationships with UWA Sport and University stakeholders, in collaboration with Marketing.

·  To develop and administer operational plans, and budgets for the Fitness and Health area. Specifically analysing Budgets, Profit and Loss Reports, Student Service Level Agreement, and key performance indicators monthly, quarterly and annually.

·  To be a valued member of the UWA Sport team.

·  To meet occupational safety and health and other compliance requirements.

Key responsibilities

Recreation and Fitness Centre – 80%

·  To oversee management of the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre, including all memberships, bookings, usage, staffing, maintenance, cleaning and security.

·  To plan, develop, maintain and deliver quality fitness and recreation programs, courses, activities and classes to best satisfy current members and attract new members.

·  To successfully increase and maintain the customer service delivery and professionalism of the UWA Recreation and Fitness centre staff, providing opportunities for leadership and instructor development (with a focus on UWA Students). Oversee the recruitment, appointment, training and supervision of all Recreation and Fitness Centre staff to deliver fitness and health programs and objectives.

·  Oversee the gym training areas and fitness classes a required, including but not limited to the Main Gym Floor, High Performance Room, Circuit and Cardio Rooms.

·  Oversee member engagement including events, activities, fitness consultations, assessment and exercise programs.

·  In collaboration with Marketing, develop and implement marketing and promotion activities and schedules, specifically membership sales and retention initiatives.

·  To provide high quality customer service, develop and maintain strategic relationships with UWA Sport and University stakeholders, in collaboration with Marketing.

·  To actively promote the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre through external events like UWA Open Day or as directed.

·  To establish budgets including all income generation, cost of sales and budget expenditure associated with the Recreation and Fitness Centre. Weekly and monthly reporting on the fitness membership sales and activities, and relevant recreation programs conducted including: assessment, finance, statistics and quality of service.

·  To develop initiatives to improve the financial capacity and viability of the Recreation and Fitness Centre.

·  Maintain up-to-date documents, policies and procedures.

Other Association – 10%

·  To be an integral part of UWA Sport team.

·  To assist in the delivery of key events.

·  Other duties as required by the General Manager of UWA Sport.

Occupational Safety & Health and compliance– 10%

·  To comply with the University’s, UWA Sport and other regulatory bodies’ policies and procedures.

·  To take reasonable care to ensure personal health and safety in the workplace.

Key Performance Indicators

·  To demonstrate measurable contribution to the senior management team and leadership of UWA Sport.

·  To demonstrate strategic and business development outcomes.

·  To meet the Fitness and Health area specific Key Performance Indicators outlined within the Operational Priorities Plan and Student Services and Amenities Fee Service Level Agreement.

·  To ensure the Fitness and Health portfolio achieves its strategic and operational objectives and meets key performance indicators, budget, membership and participation targets.

·  To report weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually on all fitness and health related events, programs, classes and activities including finance, participation and quality of service.

·  To implement clear and measureable quality control strategies in the area of operations.

·  To ensure employment and engagement of casual staff, volunteers, officials, trainers and instructors is conducted in line with UWA Sport policies and procedures while the qualifications levels are met.

·  To assist in the coordination of the Key UWA Sport events.

·  To ensure the occupational health and safety and all other compliance processes are met.

Specific work capabilities (selection criteria)

Qualifications

·  Relevant degree level qualification in sport management, recreation and/or business commerce.

Experience

·  Extensive facility management or Fitness Centre management experience.

·  Demonstrated experience in the financial management of a Recreation and Fitness Centre, with experience delivering outcomes within the resource allocation and budget.

·  Demonstrated experience in the coordination of fitness, recreation programs or projects.

·  Demonstrated experience in stakeholders and customer relationship management.

·  Experience at the management and supervision of staff and volunteers.

·  Demonstrated leadership and people management skills.

·  Demonstrated experience in supervising and managing large teams of people.

·  Demonstrated event management and coordination from conception to delivery.

·  Well-developed communication, negotiation and inter-personal skills.

·  High competency in the use of computers and a good understanding of their application in the sport and recreation industry.

Knowledge

·  Good knowledge of the Health and Fitness industry. Broad knowledge of the Sport and Recreation industry.

·  Understanding of occupational safety and health issues.

·  Sound knowledge of the university and/or university sports sector.

·  Demonstrated knowledge of physiology and fitness training principles.

·  Demonstrated knowledge of the maintenance of fitness equipment.

Other

·  National Police Clearance.

·  A Class C Licence.

·  First Aid Certificate Working with Children Check (Desirable).
