Graduate Nursing Program

Steps to getting started

Thank you for your interest in Fort Hays State University’s graduate program in nursing. Our Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is nationally accredited by the Committee on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and prepares post-BSN nurses in the advanced specialty roles of nurse administrator or nurse educator. A Post-Master’s option is also available in Nursing Administration or Nursing Education.

This document is a condensed version of what you will find in the general information on the Nursing Department website located at http://www.fhsu.edu/nursing/Online-Masters-in-Nursing-Education/ It is designed to be used as a worksheet to help you navigate the application and admission processes to the Graduate School and the Nursing Graduate Program and to track your progress through to graduation. This is an important document that will assist you in being actively involved in planning your course schedules during the next several years.

Part I—Graduate School Admission (for the Graduate School)

1. _____ Complete the Graduate School on-line application form.

2. _____ Submit the application along with the application fee.

3. _____ Provide two (2) recommendations from professors, immediate supervisors, or individuals familiar with your academic work. Letters of recommendation should be completed on letterhead stationery or the Letter of Recommendation Form and sent directly to the Graduate School.

4. ____ Provide the Graduate School a printed statement about your professional and personal goals.

5. _____ Provide the Graduate School with an official transcript of ALL college credits earned prior to application to FHSU. Official transcripts must be sent from the college/university directly to the FHSU Graduate School at 600 Park Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. Official transcripts must be on file before courses can be evaluated for credit.

6. _____ When the Graduate School has received all of the above materials, your file will be forwarded to the Department of Nursing to be reviewed at the next nursing graduate committee meeting

7. _____ The Nursing Department will return your file to the Graduate School with admission recommendations. An advisor will be appointed to assume responsibility for your program and direction of study. The Graduate School will notify you of the status of your admission with directions to contact your advisor to arrange a program of study.

Part II—Graduate Nursing Program Admission (for the Department of Nursing)

1. _____ Complete the Department of Nursing Application

Please note: a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) must be completed with at least a 3.00 GPA before being considered for admission into the MSN nursing program.

2. _____ If you have not already done so, complete the application form to the Graduate Nursing program. (Part I above)

3. _____ Must have current registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in the United States. RN license will be verified by Department of Nursing

4. _____ Must have completed a courses in undergraduate statistics (3 credits) with a grade of “B” or better.

5. _____ You must activate your TigerTracks account in order to enroll and take on-line classes. To activate your TigerTracks login, go to https://tigertracks.fhsu.edu/register. To find course and enrollment information log on to TigerTracks and click on online services.

6. _____ Follow the directions for enrollment in TigerTracks Enroll. Students are responsible to initiate their enrollment each semester. Please refer to the tutorial on TigerTracks for assistance.

Completed files will be reviewed at the next Nursing Graduate Committee meeting. Incomplete or missing required paperwork will disallow review of your application/acceptance into the nursing program.

A personal plan of study is an individualized course schedule that you and your advisor will create based upon your graduate major

International Students

Note to International Students: The MSN Program is an on-line program. It does not meet the requirements for International students who require on-campus courses.

Classes complete in another country, other than the United State, must be evaluated by an organization called the Commission of Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) at www.cgfns.org to determine if they would be equivalent to a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree in the U.S. Must specify a course by course evaluation. Report must be sent directly to Fort Hays State University, Department of Nursing, 600 Park Street, Hays KS. 67601. Student must also have a current RN license issued through the United States.
