The Nature Conservancy

Volunteer Workday January 13, 2007

Happy New Year! Saturday the 13th we will be planting longleaf pine seedlings at our Talisheek Pine Wetlands Preserve and possibly our Abita Creek Flatwoods Preserve. Both are located near each other and are adjacent to Money Hill Plantation. We are restoring longleaf pine forests and savannas as well as bayhead swamps and pond cypress areas. Here is the information on the workday/field trip. Thank you and hope to see you there!

Northshore Field Office

Where: We will meet at the new Nature Conservancy office at Money Hill, which is northeast of Abita Springs.

Directions to Nature Conservancy Field Office at Money Hill:

From I-12 at the Abita Springs/Mandeville Exit (Exit 65, the first exit east of Hwy. 190, Causeway Blvd.) go north on LA Hwy 59 about 5 miles until you get to the town of Abita Springs. At the red light (there is only one) go straight. This is Level St. which turns into La. Hwy 435. Go about 6 miles to the Money Hill entrance on the left. There is a white wooden fence at the entrance and a sign for Money Hill Golf and Country Club. Turn left and go about 2 miles to the first paved on the right to the maintenance shed for the golf course. We are located just past the maintenance facility on the left. You will see a fenced in compound with a maroon-colored metal storage unit and two doublewide trailers.

When: Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the TNC office. We will then get in TNC trucks to go to the preserve nearby. It is important that you are on time, since you cannot drive to the planting site in your car. We will plant trees until about 12:30. If you need to leave sooner, we can try to arrange that, just let me know when you sign up.

What to wear: Long pants, shoes that are water proof (rubber boots are best), jacket and hat if it is cold.

What to bring: Gloves, water, snacks.
