Biology 20 Blood Donation Game

Purpose: To examine the process of blood donation between various blood types. Students can choose to investigate only the A, B antigens or the A, B and Rhesus antigens.

Materials:

Template of Blood Donation Chart

Two pieces of colored paper to represent donor blood type and recipient blood type

Scissors

Tape

Procedure:

1) Students pair up and obtain scissors and tape/glue.

2) Both students complete the blood donation chart. The pair must choose to complete either the “Biology 20” Blood Donation Chart or the “Advanced Biology 20” Blood Donation Chart. The “Advanced” chart includes the Rhesus factor as well as the A and B antigens.

3) Teacher must check to ensure the accuracy of the chart.

4) If the chart is accurate, the student pair receives two different colored papers with either the “Biology 20 Blood Cubes” or the “Advanced Biology 20 Blood Cubes.” Teacher Note: Students who have completed the Biology 20 Blood Cubes will have identical cubes of different color; the students who have completed the Advanced Biology 20 Blood Cubes will receive different cubes of different color. This is done due to the greater variation in blood types with A,B and Rh antigens.

5) Students cut out the cube templates and tape the tabs to make two cubes.

6) One color is determined to represent the donor and the other color cube represents the recipient.

7) One chosen student rolls the cubes together.

8) If the blood types are compatible, the student gets a point and continues to roll for points. If the blood types are incompatible/clump, the dice goes to the next player.

9) Repeat Step 8 until time runs out.

Biology 20 Blood Donation Chart

Complete the chart using a ( √ ) if the blood donation is compatible, use an ( X ) if the donation will clump:

KEY

Teacher note: Make an overhead transparency of the key to place over the student chart to quickly check for answers. If there are mistakes, inform them to check their answers. Students must continue to check with the teacher until their chart is correct. Then they may play the game.
