From the Pastor….
Now that she is a little bit older, I have been teaching one of my daughters how to ride a bike. This is my second time through this as a father, teaching about all the things that one has to keep in mind when riding. We are still at the training wheels stage, learning about peddling and the basics of how to turn or stop. Throughout this process, I am reminded of a lesson that I had forgotten about bike riding. You will end up going where you look. When I’m out for a ride with my daughters and something we pass grabs their attention, their bikes veer off to the left of the right. Our eyes direct us, and our hands follow, almost without thinking. Adjustments have to be made to keep them on the road. We head where we look, whatever has our attention becomes the goal toward which we travel.
This summer we are taking time to learn more about worship, especially the questions of why we do what we do when we gather as the body of Christ. Lutheran worship is liturgical, the patterns and rhythms are there to give us God’s gifts week after week. Each week we receive from God forgiveness of sins, new life in Christ and salvation. The liturgy hands out God’s gifts to strengthen, encourage and sustain us. We take a day for rest and worship to refresh and renew us and then to prepare us to follow Christ faithfully in the week to come. We refocus; we repent of our sins and make a correction to our way of life. We are reminded that we are a child of God, created for life with Christ forever. We are reminded that the kingdom of God is our true goal and destination. A lot happens in worship! The liturgy helps us navigate all these things by delivering the gifts of God while helping us focus our attention on God and his word. At the same time, worship shapes who we are by ingraining patterns on to our bodies as well as our hearts. And that is important for us to remember. Worship is about the whole person, heart and mind, our body and soul.
Worship may at first seem so word focused, with our hymnals and bulletins, lessons and psalms all filled with words. Liturgical worship is word focused; the texts we say and sing are right from scripture. But worship is also deeply physical. God created us not just as minds or spirits but as humans with bodies. We sing, sit, stand, kneel, shake hands and give hugs during the passing of the peace. We eat bread and drink wine during the Lord’s Supper and feel or see the water as it is poured over a child of God in baptism. We may make the sign of the cross, or have the cross made over us before we confess our sins, receive the Lord’s body and blood, or leave church to go out into the world to serve God and neighbor. All these things help us to know and trust the word of God with our bodies, just as our ears help us to know the word of God in our minds and hearts. The liturgy trains us how to live by training us where to look, to the God who gives us everything we need each day and each week through Jesus Christ. Our God loves us and gives us gifts to use and enjoy and in worship we give thanks and praise for all God has given us.

Steward of the Month
For the July/August issue of the NOIZthe committee would like to recognize Torie Swanson as Steward of the Month.
This honor is based upon her caring and concern both within Zion and throughout the community.
Torie came to Zion for the Cantata as a guest of Lee Songster and never left. She can be counted on in the "loft" for her vocal talent as well as her humor.
Frequently, prior to worship service Torie can be seen welcoming and engaging in conversation with worshippers whether seated in the pews or not, thus, earning her the title of unofficial greeter.
Torie is also active at Zion via the 20/20 committee, children's music, assisting with funeral luncheons and is the originator of the Coffee Bar Ministry so integral to fellowship after services.
The tragic loss of her son, Craig " Swanny”, in 1991, led Torrie to a new ministry of caring for others. She initiated a support group known as Butterfly Moms for womenwho have suffered the loss of a child. This group meets once a month at Zion. Please take time on a Sunday to read the observation of a butterfly noted on a flier on the bulletin board, when first entering the parking lot entrance. Over the years an increasing number of women have benefitted from this ministry. Zion's Memory Garden is a project begun by the Butterfly Moms.
Finally, Torie is the unofficial leader of the " Ladies of the Long Table." These ladies engage in earnest conversation and boisterous laughter every Wednesday at the Dinner Bell. Besides drinking coffee, this group practices "random acts of kindness" throughout the community.
Torie certainly is moved by the Holy Spirit to exemplify how one engages in carrying out Zion's mission. We are thankful for what she has meant for both our congregation and the community.

Preschool News
Hip hip Hooray.... Another successful year of Zion Preschool has come to an end! On Wednesday June 22, 2016 we celebrated with our Moving Up Ceremony...
First, our 29 little ones and all their parents and families gathered in the sanctuary (it was a packed house- not one empty seat!!) where they sang several songs they have been working hard on including: "Jesus Loves Me" accompanied by Pastor Phil on the guitar and 2 solos- "I Love You" sung by Genevieve Bussman and "The ABC song" sung by Margaret Drake.
Following their performance, each child was "graduated", to move on to their next level of education, receiving a certificate of accomplishment and a small gift. There were handshakes, hugs, pictures and even a few tears as "we" looked on with pride at all that each child accomplished or overcame during their time here at Zion Preschool.
To complete the evening, we moved downstairs to the Fellowship Hall to celebrate with cake, punch and coffee.
We would like to thank Zion's congregation members and the preschool parents for your support throughout the school year. We could not do it without you. At the beginning of September, 29 little ones walked through the doors of Zion Preschool to learn, play and grow and as they move on to their next step, they have left their little handprints on our hearts for years to come!!
Congratulations to the 2015-2016 Zion Preschoolers!!! ** 3 students will move on to kindergarten, 20 students will move on to UPK and 6 students will return to Zion for another fun year of learning! May God bless them and guide them as they travel life's next journey.
Please remember ….
Our ministry continues throughout the summer and bills still need to be paid, so please be faithful with your offering even if you are away.
