Research Methodology for ICT in Education
Preamble:
Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET), NCERT is an apex institution working in the field of Educational Technology for the last 25 years. It mainly works in the field of Training, Research, Extension as well as Development (of educational resources such as Video, audio programmes, multimedia, Learning Objects etc.).
Today Information and Communication Technologies are playing an important role in enhancing quality of education. ICTs stand for Information and Communication Technologies and are defined, as a “diverse set of technological tools and resources used to communicate, and to create, disseminate, store, and manage information.” These technologies include computers, the Internet, broadcasting technologies (radio and television), and telephony. (UNDP, 2000)
Since the new ICTs are assisting in achieving many objectives of education particularly with cooperative and collaborative learning approach (of constructivist paradigm), there is a need to assess effectiveness of ICTs in education. This could be done through planned research studies. Do we need a fresh look at the research methodologies which we have been using in Education for the new ICTs as they demand a new perspective?
In order to explore the research methodologies for the ICTs in Education, a three day workshop is planned for the teacher educators through EduSat during Jan 11-13, 2010. This workshop will be attended by 200 teacher educators from 12 selected Satellite Interactive Terminals (about 20 participants at each centre).
Objectives:
To create awareness about various research methodologies suitable for ICTs in Education
To help participants develop a research proposal (draft) for any one area from ICT in Education, by selecting appropriate research methodology.
To help participants assess the research proposals developed for ICTs in Education
Resource Persons:
The workshop sessions and other activities will be guided by professional in the field. Prof. S Ramani, IIIT, Bangalore (Chief Guest for Inauguration), Prof. Vasudha Kamat, Joint Director, CIET, NCERT, Prof. Hemlata Parasnis, (Ex-Director, IASE, SNDTU, Pune), Prof. D N Sansanwal (Ex-Director, Centre of Excellence in Education, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore), Dr. Jayashree Shinde (Head, Department of Educational Technology, SNDT Women’s University), Dr. Sanjay Mishra, Reader, STRIDE, IGNOU, New Delhi.

Pre Workshop Activities
As a part of pre-workshop activities two Groups are created (Yahoo) for the participants and Resource Persons.
They are all invited to join the groups.
Resources are created on these groups so that participants get acquainted with each other and also go through the resources created.
Workshop methodology
This workshop is conducted through EduSat. CIET has a Mini Hub for Satellite education (previously through EduSat and now through INSAT IV-C R). CIET has 100 Learning Ends (Interactive centres) connected to the Teaching End at CIET. For this workshop, sessions will be conducted from the CIET Studio and will be received at 13 Centres across the country. There will be 20 participants at each centre.
There will be sessions online and offline. During Online sessions there will be presentations from the Studio followed by question-answers from Centres.
During Offline sessions participants are expected to work in small groups (4-5 each). This work will be presented to all the participants during Online session immediately after offline session.
Active participation of all the participants is solicited.
Post Workshop Activities
The workshop hopefully shall trigger motivation to prepare good research proposals in the area of ICT in Education. These proposals could be sent to ERIC, NCERT for funding. Generally the Researcher gets feedback from ERIC in 3-4 months. (pl visit http://www.ncert.nic.in/html/Guidelines_for_Submission_of_Proposals_research.htm for more information)
Alternatively, we may take up collaborative research projects with CIET Faculty as a member. This will facilitate funding of research projects. CIET team would be looking forward to research proposals in the area of ICT in Education in immediate future.
