INTERNSHIP MANUAL
SPRING 2014
Mission:
- The purpose of this internship is to:
- Aid in the progression of the human performance industry
- Promote the development of young coaches
- Provide the highest level of service to the VCU student-athlete
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the monitoring and Implementation of strength and conditioning programs
- Assist in the administrative and maintenance duties involved in a strength and conditioning program:
- Workout set up
- Facility Maintenance
- Other Assigned Projects
- Complete the VCU Sports Performance Education Curriculum
- Classroom sessions and discussions
- Weekly readings
- Weekly Special Assignments
- Weekly Practical Coaching Sessions
- Final Project and presentation
- Other Responsibilities
- Facilities
- Polar Team 2 Data administration
- RAM Board
- Social Media
Expectations:
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before the first team/athletes of the day. Unless told otherwise
- Facility opening duties
- Facility closing duties
- Weekly, daily, and monthly cleaning and maintenance
- Maintain a professional appearance
- VCU apparel, shirts are to be tucked in at all times, no sleeveless t-shirts, shorts of appropriate length, no tights or compression shorts
- Facility should be tour ready at all times
- Come prepared to assist coaches in training sessions:
- Know what is going on ahead of time
- Have workout set up ahead of time
- Do not leave athletes in the facility alone
- Do not train while athletes are training unless told otherwise
- Do not engage in any relationship with a student-athlete that is not related to athletics or strength and conditioning
- Treat all athletes, coaches, and staff with respect, humility, and professionalism

This schedule is tentative. Class, work, sport, and periodic responsibilities not relevant to VCU Strength and Conditioning are acceptable with consent of the VCU Strength and Conditioning staff. A consistent tardiness from the agreed schedule will affect your overall performance evaluation and could lead to termination of affiliation with the program.
Performance Education Curriculum
Each Intern is required to complete the VCU Strength and Conditioning Performance Education Curriculum. This is a comprehensive overview of progressive sports performance theory and the tools to effectively apply it. This will include weekly classroom sessions, weekly readings and video, and weekly assignments. There will also be a practical component of coaching 101 sessions and bi-monthly coaching landmarks.
VCU Strength and Conditioning Wordpress Blog:
The Internship curriculum is operated through a wordpressblog. Each intern will report on their weekly readings and upload assignments via a blog post that will be due at the agreed date and time. All educational material can be accessed through this blog. This blog is public. All posts should appropriately represent VCU Strength and Conditioning.
Performance Evaluation:
Interns will receive an evaluation for the semester based upon performance throughout the internship in all areas of responsibility. This grade is not representative of the grade received from the intern’s institution (if internship is for academic credit), but will be reported to the intern’s institutional internship coordinator.

- Intern will be evaluated on coaching ability in the beginning and at the end of internship. Grade will reflect improvement in coaching ability.

- Intern will prepare a final project to be presented to the Strength and Conditioning Staff at the end of the internship term.
Contract
The VCU Strength and Conditioning Department requires an evaluation period to determine the candidacy of an intern. During or after this period VCU Strength and Conditioning has the right to terminate the candidates association with VCU Strength and Conditioning.
The Strength and Conditioning intern understands that the confidentiality of VCU athletics must be maintained. Any information regarding student-athletes, coaches, and staff must not be shared with any person or affiliate outside of VCU Athletics. The Intern also understands that there is no monetary compensation with this internship.
The signing of this document signifies that the intern has read and understands the mission, objective, responsibilities, and expectations of the VCU Strength and Conditioning Internship and a failure to comply with said duties and/or actions not embodying the mission could lead to termination of affiliation.
