FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Weinberg to Host Mixed Media Exhibit by Shelley Marie

FREDERICK, Md., Thursday, January 26, 2017 — The Weinberg Center for the Arts will host a mixed media exhibit by Shelley L. Marie beginning February 3. The gallery will be displayed in the venue’s outer lobby; it will be free and open to the public during normal Box Office hours.

Shelley L. Marie was born in Frederick, Maryland in 1979. In 2005 she received a Master of Fine Arts degree from American University, attending their two-year program in Italy. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a minor in Interdisciplinary Dance from Pennsylvania State University in 2002. Marie has exhibited nationally and internationally. Marie also had the honor of working with Smack Mellon Studios (Brooklyn, NY) on Mir2 a multimedia installation and performance, winner of the “Bessie NY Performance and Dance Award." Other professional positions and experiences include: educator/instructor (Art History and Studio art), performance and collaborative artist, personal assistant, and exhibition curator, designer and installer. Marie has over seven years’ experience working for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

Recent mixed media paintings draw inspiration from an exploration of environmental survival, social and domestic interaction, medical restoration and the emotional complexities of our companionships. It is a fascination over our ability to heal and adapt to both physical and psychological wounds: the fragility of flesh and mind, the organic forces of nature, the reliance on medical intervention and the overlapping patterns that these have with one another. Marie’s works are deeply connected to the human body. They evoke imagery of healing wounds; yet bleed floral colors, stretching audience’s perception of the physiological world. Her works include natural materials that are more than meets the eye, as glazed rose petals create soft and brightly colored veins that parallel the delicate nature of human form. Marie cleverly explores the parallels between the world internal and external, exhibiting some of the intricacies between life, nature, and the human form.
