Faculty Development
1993Workshop on the Polymerase Chain Reaction process at the 1993 meeting of the California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology. I incorporated an experiment from this workshop into the biochemistry laboratory course.
1992Six-week NSF sponsored summer program at Boston University "Undergraduate Laboratory Instruction in Biotechnology" This program taught participants techniques of molecular biology and biochemistry which I have incorporated into biochemistry lecture and laboratory courses.
1991Two-week summer course on High Performance Liquid Chromatography at CSU, Fullerton from which student research projects developed.
1989Semester course, Chemistry 496 on searching the chemical literature using computer databases such as Dialog.
1987-88Completed Hazardous Materials Management Certificate Program at UC Davis
Grant Supported Activities
I have been active in directing and teaching summer programs for high school science teachers in the areas of hazardous and toxic materials and energy.
1989-91Project Director for a $250,000 three year NSF grant for thirty high-school science teachers run during the last two weeks of June entitled "Science Education: A Process Approach to Studying Toxic Substances and Their Effects on Human Health."

Service to Sonoma State University and the CSU
1988-2001SSU Chemistry Department representative on the Governing Board of the California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB). This is a system-wide program with special funding from the Chancellor's Office to expand education and research in biotechnology. It has provided workshops, equipment funds and an annual symposium.
1993Three units of released time to establish a Health Professions Advisory Board to enhance the image of SSU in the health professions community and develop resources to meet the needs of the pre-health professions program at SSU.
1995-97Treasurer, National Association of Advisors to the Health Professions. This is the National Association of which WAAHP is one of four regional groups. Over 200 colleges and universities nationwide are members of this organization.
1993-95President, Western Association of Advisors to the Health Professions. WAAHP has about 200 members who are 2- or 4-year college advisors for students pursuing careers in the doctoral level health professions. The association meets annually.
